I'm hosting a soccer contest. The entry fee is 100 points.
Each entrant gets 10 total "shares" in any team he wants. You can spread them out, double them up, or put them all on Brazil if you want.
At the end of the contest, each team has the following payout:
2 points for winning its group
1 point for finishing second in its group
2 points for winning round of 16
4 points for winning round of 8
8 points for winning round of 4
16 points for winning final
8 points for winning 3rd place
4 points for the worst finishing team in the World Cup
This is a total of 100 points that will be awarded. For each player in the contest, 100 points will be paid out - so if there were 30 entrants, the first place team would earn 16 (points for the final) * 30 entrants, plus all the points for other rounds and the group stage.
The "payoff" to each player for each team share is the total points earned by that team, divided by the number of player shares on that team. If Brazil earned 1000 points but there were 300 shares of Brazil, each player share would be worth only 3 points (all payoffs round down). 1 share on a crummy team might be worth a fortune if no one else liked them.
Due to rounding, there will be some points left over. There will be a prop contest on the Championship game to award those last points.
I will accept entries from May 13 - May 20. You need 100 points, so start saving up or winning now.
On May 21st, players will start selecting their team shares. Each day, you pick one team. If you want to do it all at once, you can do it all on the first day... but you must pick at least one share per day, or you forfeit that day's pick. The last shares will be picked on May 30th.
Then, watch the points roll in!
