How is this an easy winner? Mike Leake looked impressive in his first start with the reds and is obviously a talented sob, since he skipped the minors right from the draft and went straight to pitching in the 1st week of the season.
It doesn't help the pirates cause that zach duke has gone down the shitter when it comes to quality outings in the past few years.

Yes, I did see this. Last year though he did pretty well against them when he pitched against them at home rather then in Cincinatti. He had one bad start at home against them where he gave up 5 in 6 innings or something. I think that is good enough to win but I am expecting one of the 7 inning 2 run efforts tomorrow.

It's an easy winner because I ****ing said so Patty. Sure Leake looked impressive but he is being MAJORLY overvalued over one start. The guy walked 7 hitters. The control clearly isn't there, the Cubs just couldn't capitalize on it.
Duke started last year strong and as he continues to develop he will be strong enough to pitch well a full year. I think Leake has a good chance to get touched up tomorrow.

Duke has been improving since his atrocious 2007 year. he will give you 15-20 quality starts a year, depending upon how you define them.... Guy has pretty much always sucked, and last year was his best year if you don't count his 14 game flash in a pan 2005 rookie campaign

It's tough when you have to be an ace for your team. He would be a solid #5 somewhere.

I don't think anyone would call him their ace.. though he was the opening day starter...
Maholm, generally has been considered the better pitcher on the staff... and before he was pitching decent, it was snell and gorzalanny.... the case could be made now, that ohlendorf and morton have more potential than Duke as well

I like Maholm better then anyone on the staff. I guess he would be the technical ace because he made the all star team and started opening day. The bottom line is he has a lot of responsibility. If he could fall in line behind some veterans on a legitimate team I think he could really be a guy who can throw strikes and eat innings and hold a low 4.00 ERA and with a good offense win 15 games.

if i were forced to make a play in this, id go with leake. aside from jitters that led to walks, kid looked legit.

coincidently and article in the pittsburgh paper for friday april 16th about Duke...
guy got 23 runs of support in his 16 "losses' last year.... unreal
I'll tell you what Archie I think he will start the year fairly solid and if the Mets are still in the race in the middle of June I would love for the Mets to swing a deal for him. As a Met fan there is no way we can win with Maine and Perez in our rotation.
How about
Duke and Garret Jones
For
Fernando Martinez and Rueben Tejada and two other upper level prospects
Sound like a deal? Any chance they deal Jones Archie. Guy is incredible when he is hot.

Pirates won't be giving away Jones, like other successful pirates in that past.... due to a few reasons.... they have him under control for 4 more years before he can be a free agent..... typically they only deal big contracts after a player's arbitration years are over and/or they are gonna lose them to free agency anyways... Jones, also gives them a lefty power hitter they've been wanting for PNC's short right field for awhile.... and he can play first or rf. They don't really have any answers at first right now, though they are giving jeff clement a shot at it.... but they'll give up on him by late june, IMO
I guess its possible they could trade him for the right package of youngsters, as a) who knows if he can sustain his 3/4 of a season's worth of great hitting... the guy isn't getting any younger...
they have Duke for 2010 and 2011 and they don't have enough young arms coming up to replace him....
I feel sorry that you have to watch that head case perez.... what a waste of electric stuff

Why are the Pirates currently the favorite on the money line but the dog on the runline?

they are the home team, batting last and if they are winning, they are likely to only bat 8 times as opposed to 9 for the opposition....
you see RL's work like this alot in close games where the home team only has a slight edge

It's 3-0 in the 3rd inning. Sure, Leake looks like a minor leaguer but this one is far from "looking good" in my book. We bet on the Pirates lets remember. They will find a way to make us go through pain.

Can the Pirates bullpen just get 5 more outs. I think so.
