Guy never gives any signals or do anything. Is he really needed or is he just collecting a paycheck?

1st base coaches jobs are to keep the base runners alert/ make sure they get the signs/give them Tips on the pitchers delivery/pickoff move.

There are lots of useless jobs in baseball. I'm surprised there isn't a coach in the clubhouse who exclusively coaches players on how to take a dump between innings.

keeps a stopwatch on the pitcher's delivery to the play, holds the batting gloves after a runner reaches first, reminds them of the outs/situations, helps them locate a ball in the air and help them to decide if they go halfway down the line ect..

keep in mind a first or 3rd base coach, is not the actual "job".... he is just one of the coaches on the team, and he was picked for that role also.... Rusty Kuntz was one of the all time greatest first base coaches..... won many a game, just from his sharp first base coaching

I can think of about five things they do Pavy:

            1) Yell "BACK" on a pick-off attempt.
            2) Congratulate the hitter after successfully reaching first base.
            3) Try to get in the way of the first baseman on a pop up in foul territory.
            4) Avoid getting nailed with a line drive.
            5) Give foul balls to kids.

Plus, the things Archie said too...

            Sounds like a great job!
