Robbers apparently seeking drugs set off an alarm early Wednesday morning at American Self Storage.
When Richmond police arrived, they found a storage unit had been robbed of marijuana and still contained drug paraphernalia.
Richmond Police Department Det. Brad Berner said the alarm was triggered when thieves pried open the door to a unit at the facility at 1880 Williamsburg Pike. Some leftover marijuana was found in the unit along with drug paraphernalia.
At that point, Berner said a K9 unit was called to the scene. The dog indicated there were drugs in a second unit, and a search warrant was obtained to investigate further.
When the second unit was opened, police discovered drug paraphernalia and $48,000 in cash.
"It looks like they came in through the back (of the property)," Berner said. "They cut and pried the door, and that is when the alarm sounded. Each unit has an alarm, and the security guy saw that and called (police).
"We got the call about 2:40 a.m. (Wednesday), and the guys working the case were on it the better part of the day."
RPD completed its investigation and forwarded information to Wayne County Prosecutor Mike Shipman, Berner added.
Shipman's office will now use the information to file charges against the renters of the two storage units.
"The information was also forwarded to the DEA," Berner said.
A woman who answered the phone Thursday at American Self Storage said she didn't know anything about a robbery when the Palladium-Item contacted the business for comment.
