They didn't mention that you had to do grunt work for a long time before you drive a truck.

Unemployment rate will not drop below 8% until 2012. This is a great news but 30% of the trainees can't even pass the probationary period. Lots of inept people in this country.

Economy is fine, made more in the market in 2009 and so far in 2010 than any year since 2006. and what about the 90% that ARE employed? Why do we just focus on the 8 to 10% who aren't? Survival of the fittest boys.

Most people can't drive a car. It's hard to train people to drive big brown trucks with limited visibility and many blind spots without making an accident. On top of that they have to make sure they deliver packages on time. Also you have to drive safely so you won't break all the packages you are delivering.

don't you also have a training course 4 being a truck driver so that you will understand the blind spots ect....
I'm pretty sure they package the trucks so the packages will be safe and secure unless you make a big mistake, like crashing.

It takes years to be a driver and many quit before that, no young drivers around here either. Seems also you need to be a stud but below 6ft.

nah you can get hired right off the street. i worked at the main hub part time back in the 90's and if the small local hubs needed drivers you couldn't transfer and get them, they'd hire new people right off the street.
it wasa fukked up system they had in place. how the union ever let them have it like that always baffled me.
senority meant nothing from my experience breaking my back in that hell hole.
and i don't know any local drivers that make over 74 grand from picking up and making deliveries, especially starting out.
If you do some regional driving with the feeder trucks or full trailer or specialty loads and have quite a few years in then i can see someone making over 74 grand.

LOL they put this big sticker on the back of the trucks that says "How's my driving?" and then there is a 800 number that people can call and bitch about you. I used to deliver flowers as a ute and would get called into the office once a month over a complaint. Never mind the 10000's of packages that you deliver on time you only have to deal with the one you didn't and all the other drivers you pissed off. 74K not worth the frustration you will be dealing with.

It was wrong for them to single you out because you are a ute. There are a lot of utes up here in Canada that are fighting for their rights as a distinct society, but the problem is that so many of them live up to the stereotype by pouring gasolin on mattresses and sniffing their way into a drug-induced slumber. Didn't know there was a lot of discrimination against utes in the US as well, but not surprising.

that is what unions will do for you
of course that also makes them charge higher rates to their customers, have a negative quarterly revenue growth, and generate only 26% more revenue than your closest competitor, even though that competitor is half your size and that competitor stock price is 40% higher than yours.
and instead of looking for ways to improve your business model or save money, you pay your employees to write letters to Congress to change the law and force your competitor to unionize as well.
