the biggest reason is because 97% of American People have played alot more Basketball in their lives than Hockey. You watch and get involved as a fan for the long term in a sport you understand. I'd venture to say beyond avid sports fans. Most Americans don't know what an "icing" penalty is, or what the lines are on the ice are all about.

hockey needs to go to 4 on 4. Players are to big now and there isn't much room to manuever like it is when it is a 4 on 4. 4 on 4 is much more watchable
