Police shoot suspect they believe robbed casino
BLACK HAWK - The suspect in Saturday afternoon's casino robbery was picked up at another nearby casino a few hours later. That man is now in the hospital.
The strange situation started at the Famous Bonanza Casino in Central City at 3:15 p.m. where police say a man walked in and robbed the cashier at gunpoint. The cashier gave him an undisclosed amount of money. No one was injured at the first casino.
Police caught up with their man at the Golden Gates Casino in nearby Black Hawk. A Black Hawk police officer was searching the Golden Gates Casino parking garage when he located a Black Audi matching the description of the suspect's vehicle. It was then that the suspect appeared and engaged the officer.
They also say at least one shot was fired at the suspect, and he was wounded.
Gamblers and casino employees say this is really shocking for their community. In fact, the City Manager of Blackhawk says it's been about ten years since they last had an armed robbery.
One witness describes the chaos, "We thought it was like fireworks in there, but it was really quick."
The suspect has been taken to Saint Anthony Central Hospital in Denver. Police are not talking about his injuries. Police say it's still under investigation if shots were fired at the officer. The Black Hawk officer, who is a 16-year veteran, will be on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
