Jacksonville in 1970 maybe? NC State and Villanova played in major conferences, something Butler does not do.

#3Nah, 40 team tourney with all the automatic bids still in place and one of the best 2 players that year. Also, a number 1 seed.Comment -

#4Name one other player on that team. Now also name one other player on this year's Ohio State team. Same thing, except Indiana State probably not even considered a mid major back then.Comment -

#9If you're warranting surprise based on being a non-power conference team, Butler would be I suppose. But this is a team that was ranked all season, so not that big a suprise based on merit. Based on the road they had to travel to get there, certainly surprising by beating the top two seeds in the West. I'd compare them to maybe the Utah team with Keith Van Horn in 1998. Utah was a ranked team, seeded 3rd, but beat a top seed in Arizona and then a top seed in North Carolina to get to the title game.
If we're talking about true surprises, I'd say Villanova in 1985 is the correct answer. That was an 8 seedComment -

#10As others have said, Butler isnt Cinderella. They've been top 10 all year. The only thing Cinderella about them is they dont play in a power (BCS) conference. But they can play...

#11Eaglesphan in my opinion is correct with the Villanova call. They are the lowest seed to ever win the tourney. It actually happened the first year they expanded the tourney to 64 teams.Comment -
