            The Oklahoman
STILLWATER — Bobby Reid stood near the team charters last Friday night, using his cell phone, eating his boxed meal.

It would've been normal post-game activity but for one thing.

His mother was feeding him chicken.

Which brings us to the quarterback switch-a-roo at Oklahoma State.

            Don't see the connection?

Let me explain. Cowboy coaches have gone full-speed ahead with the Zac Attack, opting to start Robinson over Reid a week ago, then sticking with him against Texas Tech today even after an embarrassing loss at Troy. Weren't we being told just last week that Reid was still the guy? All the weight with which Cowboy coaches were backing Reid has totally shifted to Robinson.

            The change seems sudden.

Thing is, it may not be as abrupt as it looks. If you believe the rumors and the rumblings, Reid has been pushing coaches that way for quite some time.

Tile up the back stories told on the sly over the past few years, and you see a pattern that hasn't always been pretty.

Word is that Reid has considered transferring a couple different times, the first as early as 2005. Reid, then a redshirt freshman, was facing competition from returner Donovan Woods, and apparently, Reid considered leaving OSU just because he had to compete for the spot.

Reid's nerves have also been an issue. Earlier this year, he told our Andrea Cohen about his game-day emotions.

"I get sweaty palms. I get the butterflies in my stomach. I sweat lot,” he said then. "I've been playing this game for 15 years. And I can honestly say every game I've played in, I've been nervous. It's not so much me being scared; I just get to a point where I start worrying about a lot of things I can't control.”

A lot of guys get nervous, some even puke before games. How you handle the nerves is important, though, and Reid hasn't always managed them well. He has gotten off to some extremely slow starts, putting the Cowboys in some holes. Some, they dug out of, with Reid often wielding the biggest shovel, and some, they couldn't.

Then, there have been the injuries. No doubt some of Reid's ailments have been severe, including an injured shoulder that required surgery and forced him to redshirt. Other times, though, Reid has been nicked in games and sat it out instead of gutting it out.

Injuries are tricky, of course. You don't want a guy to put himself in harm's way if he's really hurt, and yet, football is one of those sports in which everyone plays hurt. Aches and pains, bumps and bruises are part of the gig.

Reid's injury against Florida Atlantic — whatever it was — appeared minor but just might have been the thing that pushed Cowboy coaches over the edge. Even though Mike Gundy said last week that Robinson got the nod because he had the better week of practice, insiders say that the coaches decided to bench Reid early in the week. The bottom line: The switch is less about Robinson's play and more about Reid's attitude.

"The coaches made a decision,” Reid told our Mike Baldwin after the Troy game. "I just have to go with it, get better and get back on the field.”

There's something to be said for not being a malcontent, but you can almost see Reid shrugging his shoulders as he says those words. Does he have the fire in his belly?

Or does he want to be coddled, babied, perhaps even fed chicken?

That scene in the parking lot last week had no bearing on the Cowboys changing quarterbacks, and yet, it said so much about Reid. A 21-year-old letting his mother feed him in public? Most college kids, much less college football players, would just as soon be seen running naked across campus.

And what of the scene television cameras captured earlier that evening of Reid on the sidelines laughing with assistant strength coach Trumain Carroll? The same cameras showed him throwing his cap in disgust after a missed play earlier, but to be laughing in the final minutes of an embarrassing loss is bad form.

Reid is the most talented quarterback in Payne County, but he hasn't proven that he's the toughest. If you listen to the rumblings and the rumors, Cowboy coaches simply grew weary of it.

Who knows? There might come a day when they grow tired of something Robinson does, but for now, they appear willing to sacrifice a bit of talent for a lot of grit.

She deserved it. Every athlete gets nervous before a game whether it's high school or pro. You get butterfly's in your stomach but it goes away when the game starts.

She made it look like he was soft. Her article was very misleading and what she said about the coaches was an outright lie.

The coach was right. He's an amateur athlete. He's not a pro and she doesn't have the right to come up with this type of sensational writing.

I'm in agreement with the majority and Gundy here that it was a totally crap piece of journalism. As far as I'm concerned, this gal is just another hack at another US newspaper writing another column filled with garbage and aimed solely at creating controversy. The whole 'mom feeding him chicken' thing is completely silly, irresponsible and a poor enough analogy that the writer had to explain it to her reader. Plus it's not like the Oklahoman hasn't been through anything controversial before, and I'll be surprised if this issue isn't explored more in this day and age when throwing down the race card is so fashionable...
                  http://backissues.cjrarchives.org/year/99/1/worst3.asp
Even more recently, says former Oklahoman reporter Charolette Aiken, "the Oklahoman put black faces on the front only if they were athletes, a black Republican, or a bad guy." Observer editor Troy once wrote of the paper's plantation mentality: "The paper has been quietly and effectively racist in all its long history."
However, at the same time, I'm not in Gundy's corner for the way he acted and the way he handled the deal. To begin with, you don't stand up in front of a bunch of reporters, tell them you never read newspapers, then launch into a rant that George Patton would be proud of for three minutes about an article in the newspaper.

I don't care how many mothers approach you after the game, as Gundy contends, and asks if you've read a particular article, if you're going to claim you don't read the crap, then don't act like you've memorized the crap!

Gundy talks a good game about being an adult, but he showed me nothing but immaturity and an unprofessional manner in this deal. His team had just come out on top in what I thought was one of the most entertaining football games I'd seen. I watched the second half, and I don't really like either school, and yet I enjoyed myself immensely. And this is how Gundy acts in the press conference?

No way some mom came up to him after the game and that was the first time he'd seen the article. NO WAY. He's elevated this writer, this hack, to victim status, and in the end Gundy will be the one left with egg on his face. There was a far better way, and certainly far more adult manner, to have dealt with this writer and this story. Gundy's performance, while entertaining I assume to many, mucked it up even worse.

Mike Gundy was a 100% wrong on this issue...when pressed to ask what about the article he thought was wrong he could not come up with an answer or point to any portion of the article that was untrue or questionable. He was just upset that it became public. Well if you disagree with the article....tell everyone you think what is wrong with it, not that you don't read newspapers.

People always blame journalists and the fact that she was a woman made it even easier in his mind to shout and berate her.....he probably had this planned. Sorry Coach Gundy, but you don't have to treat professionals (whether they are right or wrong) like they are your players and shout and scream like a lunatic and embarrass yourself and your program.

About as unprofessional as I've ever seen a coach act....if anything, Gundy should be severely reprimanded by the OSU athletic department for such embarrassing behavior. Anyone who thinks highly of Coach Gundy for "standing up for his player" should probably reconsider given that he couldn't even point out was wrong with the article...just that he did not like it. Sorry but your players are public figures...they receive scholarships that are paid for by tax payer dollars........live with the fact that they are fair game for public criticism.

Remember, most of these coaches are not educated people and have a hard time thinking outside of football issues....to Gundy, screaming like a lunatic is probably something that comes easy to him....civilized discourse and disagreement probably don't register high with him. He could have handled this situation a 1000 times better. He embarrassed himself, his players, and his program. He is a complete laughing stock right now. I am very confused why people on here have so much respect for him all of a sudden.

To top it off, he is an average coach whose teams don't play anything that resembles defense.....we aren't talking Jim Tressel here? Can you imagine Jim Tressel behaving like this?

I agree, Buddy, about his rant appearing to be something he planned well in advance and the fact he could've handled this matter far better. Gundy could've injected a little comic relief into the story, shown he was behind his players and left the reporter holding the bag, or the bucket, with just a little more thought. He should've entered the press conference with a player's mom who had a bucket of KFC. When this reporter asked him a question, probably about Bobby Reid and the QB situation, have the mother start to feed him a piece of chicken while he answers so that all was heard was, "Mumble, mumble, slurp, chew-chew-chew, mumble, mumble." On his way out of the press conference, set the bucket of chicken in the reporter's lap.

The feeding her son chicken can be looked at as racial if she is white... If "nappy headed hoes" could be considered racial so can this..the only thing missing is the watermelon..

I agree with what he did for one main reason.. I am sick and tired of these yahooo reporters instagating not reporting... How did she get that info. that his mom feeds him chicken and he's a momma's boy..? Did she call his mom and ask her.? If so then fine but if not then she is doing the BatemanPatrick thing and making sh*t up that has nothing to do with anything and writing it...

I would like to see someone start a weekly show blasting some of these reporters and how/why they say or write what they did... Can you imagine if this forum had a weekly televised show about reporters and announcers...? We'd f*ck them up and if we had them to question.. and had video archives of them to show on top of it..? Damn we would have them ready to jump off of a bridge...

I would have done the "Lou Brown" thing from Major League.. Dropped the paper on the floor and p*ssed on it... These reporters go around terrorizing coaches/players lives not to mention they do very little actual reporting and it's now mostly accusations and sensationalism...

Coaching and playing is very emotional and it's providing entertainment to society but they probably feel like COPS NOT REPORTERS are following them around... Believe me it's not hard to get someone who is on an emotional swing that day to snap... When Bobby Knight or Bill Parcels does it it's cute I guess huh..?

Every f*ckin' week these idiots say how stupid it was for one coach to have gone for it on 4th down because he didn't get it and then five minutes later praised another coach for doing the exact samething but he gets the first down so he's praised "FOR THE DECISION TO GO FOR IT"...

The other thing I am really sick of is how the person reacting is the one who gets labeled the lesser adult or unprofessinal here.. How f*ckin' professinal is it to write an article about a football player to talk about his mom feeding him chicken..? Is he the only one who mom's makes chicken for him in this world..?

                                  F*CK ALL OF THESE REPORTERS...

Most of what these reporters do is scrootinize others for decisions they make with or without their jobs.. Don't you think these reporters should get scrotinized for doing the samething..? Again where is eating chicken relevant..? Maybe if these reporters got hit in the mouth once in a while they would stop instagating and start reporting... If you don't do sh*t like this it will get worse so he had to step in at some point..

i thought the article said cameras caught him and his mom behind the stadium while he was waiting to get on the bus.

                                      part of the article"
"That scene in the parking lot last week had no bearing on the Cowboys changing quarterbacks, and yet, it said so much about Reid. A 21-year-old letting his mother feed him in public? Most college kids, much less college football players, would just as soon be seen running naked across campus."

I would bet my bankroll on the fact that this is blown way out of proportion and in which case that reporter should be publically insulted... If it's ok for an athlete to get publically insulted then it's ok for a reporter... I would bet the mom gave him a bag with food or even something else but not that she was feeding him with her hand like a 2 year old baby... How many college students take their laundry home, get food from home, money and so on... Please this b*tch is one terrible reporter if she didn't even see this allegid camera shot and went off of the story alone and improvised...

The article saying college students would rather run naked acrossed campus then be caught having their mom feed them implies she was feeding him from her hand to his mouth like a mom would feed a two year old... I'd like to see where that is detailed as happening...

i agree with you, i just was pointing out what the article said, i haven't seen the footage either. for all we know he could of had his throwing arm wrapped up with ice and gear in his other hand and his mom was giving him a bite of her own food, could of been just one bite, she might of had some really tasty soup, and said 'hey try a bite of this, this is good", and someone caught it , and a reporter ran with it.
