Internet Gambling If Gore Beat Bush
Where would the internet gambling industry be today had Gore won the 2000 election (he did win the popular vote--damn electoral college system)? Forget the implications of the War with Iraq (never would've happened) and the U.S.'s slow response to Global Warning; focus on the implications to our Internet Gambling.

Would the crackdowns on BetonSports and Neteller have happened, thus causing the flight of Pinnacle and others from the US market? As the proclaimed inventor of the Internet, I don't think Al would have let these attacks occur.

    Probably.

Washington usually doesn't pick and choose what cases US Attorney's pursue.

I was prosecuted in 1998 when Clinton was in office.

If the GOP had retained control of Congress, I'm not sure anything would be different with regards to internet gambling. If ol' Billy Frist pushes the same Port Security act through, then Gore, or whoever was elected in 2004, would probably have signed it anyway.

I don't know about that Willie, the way it was done, last minute, tacked on, was pretty ballsy. I think they would only do somethimg like that if they felt completely in control politically.

There are an awful lot of assumptions in this whole deal, and when you're only dealing with assumptions, then anything is possible.

First, one assumes that Gore won the election in 2000. Then one must assume that there never would've been a Sep 11th. If both assumptions were indeed reality, then there never would have been a need for the Port Security Act in 2006 when, I assume, we're assuming Gore would be in the middle of his second term at 1600 Pennsylvania after assuming he gets re-elected in 2004.

Here's another assumption: Without Dubya in the White House all that time, I think it's a rather safe assumption that there wouldn't have been this rush to unseat a bunch of GOP members of Congress in last year's midterm elections. It's fairly obvious, at least to me, that the Congressional turnover last fall was a vote AGAINST Bush more than anything else.

Frist, and other Republican's in office, might not have felt a need to rush the anti-gambling through as they did. And, repeating myself, without a Sep 11th, they wouldn't have had a political hot-potato to attach it to like the Port Security Act.

But that's a lot of assumptions: 1) Gore elected in 2000; 2) Gore re-elected in 2004; 3) No Sep 11th; 4) Not as much change in the midterm elections last year without, 4A) Bush never in power and, 4B) No Sep 11th.

I can make a shorter list of assumptions that lead to the Astros winning the 2005 World Series instead of being swept, by the way

Pretty funny, JJ. Now, please show me where I said the Republicans caused Sep 11th.
