Baseball and motivation?

Being an European, Im wondering: Does motivation count in Baseball? I remember one sharp Canadian (yes they exist) telling me to ignore the motivation at the end of the regular season, and go for the crazy underdog prices. Like today when the Yankees lost, should not Detroit have plenty of motivation ahead of their matchup against Minnesota?

Also, Los Angeles Angels have already clinched the division and playoff..would they field a second team today against Texas?

And finally, San Diego, plenty of motivation against a team playing for nothing but pride?

Please advise me on these thoughts regarding baseball end of season and motivation: Would be highly appreciated.

yes to all your questions . But doesn't mean the ball will bounce your way or you will get the better calls etc .... is a good strategy though to play those scenarios overall in the big picture . Tonight , could be the exception to the rule .......... I do like the Tigers tonight .
