Firefox Extensions - IE Tab, Faster Fox, etc.

Since I noticed alot of members liked the IE Tab extension, and since Ive mentioned it in a few threads and it seems to get lost. I decided to start a thread about Firefox extensions. The main extension download page is found HERE

The one I want to post first is the one that made me decide to post this thread:

IE Tab

This allows you to view pages that dont load right in Firefox (for example: sbrlines) in a Tab that uses the IE engine. So you dont have to startup IE. Go into IE Tab options and put in those URLs that dont look right/work in FF so they load up using IE Tab automatically.

Speed up that browers by using this extension. Gives you different levels of customizing to get the most out of your browsers. Firefox is fast to begin with, but this just makes it better.

I'm going to try Firefox. I downloaded it and it seems OK so far. But then when I try to download and install this IE tab extension, I keep getting "Windows cannot open this file" because it doesn't recognize the extension (which is xpi).

What am I doing wrong?

never had heard of firefox until reading about it on this site...with netscaping fading out I thought IE was the only browser...will keep reading about it though...thanks...

I never had that happen before. Are you downloading the extension with Firefox and not IE? Because it downloads and installs right away, then you must close out the browser and restart it to see the changes.

Thank you Onlooker. After I downloaded it, Windows kept claiming it can’t recognize the file to open and install it. But after I turned the computer off and back on, I got a message saying there was something waiting to be installed and asking me if I wanted to install it. I clicked yes, and that seems to have done the trick.

I had always used Internet Explorer, and for the last year or two when I had several sites I wanted to open at once—e.g., sportsbooks to shop lines—I used Maxthon because it has that same feature as Firefox where they all open in one window with the tabs on top.

So far the ones I’m having trouble with in Firefox and so am going to use the IE extension instead are Hollywood (I can log on and navigate much of the site, but the actual lines don’t display) and Matchbook (I can’t even log on). Also I noticed that for sites that need to open a new screen (such as ABC Islands, or the pending bets page for sites like CRIS and Mansion), in Firefox the new page opens in its own new window, rather than making a new tab and staying in that same group window. There might be a way to change that, but I tried a few things under Tools and failed. In any case, I’ve found that if I use the IE extension for a site, than any new pages do indeed stay in the same group window, just like I was used to with Maxthon.

It was talked about in another thread that Firefox is better for avoiding the very annoying tendency of Pinnacle to change every line you want to bet, evidently once you’re on some list of theirs. I didn’t notice a difference, but the problem has lessened lately anyway. For several years of playing at Pinnacle (with Internet Explorer and Maxthon), I got the message that the line had changed at most 5% of the time. (Maybe 8% on halftimes or when the lines are jumping around a lot, and less than 1% otherwise.) Then for about a week period lately, it dramatically increased to where the book became basically unusable for me during line movement times like halftimes—maybe 85%-90% of bets rejected. Since then it’s settled into perhaps 30% rejections. Bad, but not as ridiculous as before.

I tried several games at Pinnacle with Firefox yesterday, and I’d say it was about the same 30% rejection rate. So the browser didn’t seem relevant.

Firefox seems pretty good about automatically filling in the log in information. It seems to work with about 80% of my sites, as did Maxthon though not always the same sites. One difference is that Firefox fills in both the account number and password if you want it to, while with Maxthon I generally still had to type in the password.

Pages seem slightly faster to load in Firefox but that could be my imagination. Plus speed varies so much due to traffic and such that has nothing to do with my computer or browser that it’s hard to judge.

After installing it (full instructions provided in link) open a site with advertisments using Internet Explorer and then open the same page using Firefox, you'l see a big difference.

thanks Looker, but i've never had any problems with SBRLines not working with my Firefox except once and i think it was SBR that was having problems. but anyway, i just have my setting set to auto update.

I started this thread in December of 2005, and I think SBRlines wasn't supported on Firefox yet. So IE Tab was needed.

I am a Firefox fan, and have mine pretty well customized. One nice thing about it is that it works the same on my Windows and Mac machines -- don't have to deal with different setups.

Some of the suggestions posted here are probably not as appropriate on the newest iteration of Firefox as they used to be. Specifically, if you're setting up Firefox today I suggest you don't bother with the tab-modifying extensions, specifically tabbrowser preferences and tab mix plus, as their functionality is captured, for the most part, in the basic build now.

I use and recommend the following:

- 404: File Is Not Found? (good for dealing with dead links)
- Adblock plus and Adblock Filterset.G Updater (crucial for getting rid of BS ads
- Download Statusbar (reat improvement to the display of ongoing downloads)
- DownThemAll; also try BatchDownload
- FasterFox (antisocial, but effective)
- Fission (minor improvement, but slightly useful particularly if your connection is not always great)
- Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer (only if you use Firefox on two machines, but indispensable if you do)
- Go To Selection (not often needed, but not bad)
- Google Toolbar (primarily for its auto fill, which works better than Firefox's; autolink is OK, and the spell checker is better than the regular one [though I use a separate program for that now])
- ImageZoom (this functionality should be included, but it isn't)
- InFormEnter (the best form filler I know)
- Locationbar2 (minor but not bad)
- McAfee Site Advisor (a very good idea for avoiding bad sites)
- Menu Editor (if you hate clutter, as I do)
- SafeCache and SafeHistory (very nice security additions)
- Save Image in Folder (if you save images, obviously)
- Save Session (not as useful as it was now that the main program saves after a crash -- not that crashes should be common)
- Screen Grab (among other things, the easiest way to grab a shot of your bet confirmations)
- Status Buttons (great for saving screen real estate)
- Toolbar Buttons (put them on your status bar, using the above extension)
- Undo Closed Tabs Button
- Update Bookmark (great if you ever bookmark threads -- you can update the bookmark to reflect the last page with just a click)

If you're very into security, I also recommend PasswordMaker. If you use machines other than your own it really isn't practical, and the learning curve is long, but it is great for creating essentially uncrackable passwords, different for each site you go to, and along the way for helping avoid phishing. I don't use it any more because I need to be able to key in my passwords from remote locations, but I think most people should give it serious consideration.
