#2If the Ncaa expands next year to 96 teams, won't be much left for the NIT. Colleges used to be able to play in both tournaments. CCNY is the only college to win both tournaments in the same year. Then came the point shaving scandal and the end of major college basketball for CCNY.Comment -

#3I don't know about the 96 teams idea.
Why not just Obama-ize the whole tournament and let every team in.
I mean, 65 is a lot of teams. If you put in 96, basically you're putting everybody in.
If you go 96, why not put 128?Comment -

#4Well with 96, they'd keep the same number of date that they have now, except that there would be a lot of games on what is now play-in Tuesday.Comment -

#5I think 65 is too many. But money and greed will win out. Funny that the NCAA wants to raise the number of teams in basketball, but doesn't want a football playoff. Guess the bowl set up is too lucrative.Comment -

#896 is the worst idea ever...

#9They need to downsize to 48 not increase to 96. 16 of the teams who get in now are below average.Comment -

#12I do not like how this affects the bracket contests, now you have only one day to fill out, or 96 team bracket is whoreshit.Comment -

Funny how there is 12 posts after your initial post and no one has came even close to answering your question. I personally do not know the answer to your question but I do know back in the day that teams could pick which tournament they wanted to compete in out of the ncaa tournament and the NIT and in I think the late 60s is when the Bruins choose the NCAA and dominated if for several years. This could perhaps be the reason or how it overtook the NIT, not sure on if this was a reason or not, but could have been.Comment -

#17Iceminer, thanks for bringing it back to the original post - an interesting topic. I know that the NIT was a much bigger deal in the 50s and earlier. Wiki has a detailed piece about the history. I just skimmed it - but those interested can read it in detail.
I did see in the article the Marquette a top 10 team turned down the NCAA for the NIT in 1970. McGuire was mad about the NCAA region they were put in.Comment -
