actually as some one who has been viewed with both "problems"
sports bettors are viewed worse
why ? not sure and i could never figure it out
maybe because you never hear about a famous person going off to Betty Ford for getting barreled in

Probably because of guys like Art Schlicter
Schlicter writes: “Some people say to me today, ‘Don’t worry, it’s all behind you.’ ”
“No, it isn’t, because you can’t just walk away from a disease like mine.
“Will I do bad things again that will send me back to prison? I admit the urge is always there.
“Today, I know I’m still only one wrong step away from imprisonment, insanity, or death.”
Schlichter now manages gamblingpreventionawareness.org and is a speaker on the dangers of gambling addiction. The first chapter of the book, which comes out today and which was written with Jeff Snook.
Schlicter spent time in 40 prisons.
40 PRISONS.

Stock players are "usually" a tad higher on the social scale---they tend to be educated, upper middle-class.
I mean, guys are not stealing from their parents, or max'ing out credit cards to buy 10 shares of Berkshire Hath B.
Although--perhaps the biggest crook on the planet was a stock player in Madoff.
So maybe he makes up for all the sports gamblers in one shot.

for the most part, they go hand in hand...its all about the goodtimes..watch the Stu Unger story....ends up being on the "lifestyles of the not so rich or famous"...its the style of life we chose...out..

stocks are a little different because overall stock guys win and bettors lose. But poker players also lose so hard to understand why they are looked at better

Sports Bettors are also very angry and frustrated people, just look at SBR.
We blew it all
Stock players I guess are more educated and well spoken therefore can get away with that form of gambling.

drug users are viewed as worse. think of the actual impact of drugs on the world. and then compare gambling which is legal in many places. which would the public rather have disappear?

Good point, drugs are more damaging. Sports bettors though not far behind.

Sports betting has an underworld tone to it. When I mention it to the average person I meet its generally greeted with a distasteful reaction. I'm at the point in my life where I really don't care. As for drugs most people use drugs in one form or another, so its more common place in society. To each its own as long as it doesn't harm others.

if i may alter JJ's original assertion slightly, both sets of people are frowned upon and ostracized to an extent. cause the only ones that make news are the ones with zero self control and fall prey to destructive addictions. that isn't the fault of gambling, that is a defect in the personality of a weak person.
the frustrating part for me is that the aforementioned poker players are now fukkin superstars with commercials and shows on at least 4 different tv channels. why the double standard on those?
