Aren't these somewhat correlated on big spreads? If a team is -14 and the total is 185 then its very difficult to keep it under if they cover (not impossible, but less likely). Just a thought. I'm sure there is ar eason because other books have the same policy for hoops.

No reasoning behind this, but usually when you got the winning team... which ever Total favors that teams playing style usually wins.
