How much does average person save by using a hand can opener vs. one with electric?
Over $20 a year?

Depends on how many cans you open a year. I make a point to buy cans with pull tabs so I can get the extra $.000001 when I bring in my cans to the scrap dealer... don't you?

how much money would you save if you washed your ass in the sink after taking a shit instead of buying toilet paper?

I only open about 20-30 cans a year if that. So that's probably the amount of electricity of running the TV for an hour. Id say less than $1

Pull every plug out of the wall of anything you're not using.
If it's plugged in, it's drawing electricity.

That's kind of stupid. Unplugging shit doesn't really save much. I know everything plugged in draws an infinitesimal amount of electricity, but the surge of plugging it back up is usually more than that. So save yourself the money of the block of dry ice & resetting your clocks every day genius

Sorry Profit, but mythbusters tested this. The "vampire" power is much greater than the "start up surge" in fact the start up surge is really really small.

A fridge is over the top, but why not the cell phone charger, toaster oven, BS like that. If the country saved 10% overall, we'd all be better off.

Variables needed for two equations
Equation #01
A:Number of times cans opened in a year
B:Appliance electricity usage
C: $ Cost per kWh
A*(B*C)=X
Equation #02
A: Number of times cans opened in a year
B: Caloric use per opened can
C: $ Cost per calorie
A*(B*C)=Y
If X>Y Choose Y
If X<Y Choose X
So essentially if you eat lots of cheap potatoes you should go with hand opening but if you eat expensive protein it is better to go the electric route.

Yeah computers and consumer electronics are the real culprits. I only do it when I go away for the weekend.

Certainly you won't notice using an electric can opener. I'd guess that wouldn't cost more than a dollar to open 365 cans.
The vampire load stuff is real. Your home glows with stupid little 24/7 lights on TV's, cable boxes, washing machines, even dishwashers. I believe the 10% figure on that.
Don't use anything but compact fluorescent bulbs, even if you have a shitload of incandescent bulbs, toss them. Change a fixture that won't take the CFL bulbs.
Freezers run most efficiently when full of stuff.

You forgot circumferance of the can, and thickness of the metal, and what metal the can is made of.

none, your socks wear out faster when you saw holes in them.
