#2if you are a halfway decent negotiator, you can get 10% over typical trade-in value, EASY
when buying a new car..........better than car-max and better then selling your car to some
schmuck who comes back and complains 2 months later that you sold him a lemon and he
wants to sue youComment -

#3i traded in my first car, a total clunker that was worth $700, for $1500 trade-in-value off of a new car, more than
double what the car's bluebook wholesale price wasComment -

#6Originally posted by hoopster42if you're buying a new car, i HIGHLY recommend just trading it in to the dealer because once it's off your hands, you NEVER have any liability towards it and you can rest easy. besides, one time i listed my car for sale in the local paper and at least a dozen dikkheads came by my house to see the car, EVERY single one of them offered me lower than the lowest bluebook value because those dikkheads wanted to resell my car for more

#8the key is to play "the game" when negotiating for the NEW car and one of those aspects is saying, "you know, i need MORE for my trade-in" because man i took GREAT care of that car, it has FREEWAY miles, never missed an oil change, got one every 3000 miles, just maintained the shit outta the car, i need some more value off that thing". just play the gm man!Comment -

#9I don't think they pay over value, but they are a good place to SELL a car, no hassles of showing a car to people, and possible later issues.
In 2007, I sold them a Honda Accord with 250,000 miles and a tranny that was starting to go. The car was nearly totalled in an accident years earlier, and needed like $7,000 of body work and painting, that took a month to complete.
they paid $2,000 for it. I'd rather do that than sell it to some local person that buys beater cars....they might come back and burn your house down or something because the car had a problem.
I bought a truck a few years ago for 5k ( good deal from a guy moving to Florida). Took it to Carmax out of curiosity back then, they offered $4500.
I don't think you can go buy cars and profit by selling them to Carmax ? Maybe you can, but as a seller I'd start with their offer first thing.Comment -

#12i tried to sell a 2004 audi S4 two years ago to carmax. The car blue booked for 19.5k and they offered me 11k. Ended up trading it in and got much closer to the 19.5Comment -

#13I'd never buy from Carmax, but it is a good place to look at cars and test drive them. They have a great variety, so you can see everything at one place, and decide what you like.
I think they sell mainly to people that they give credit to....desperate people they can fleece.Comment -

#14Good info in this thread. I've got a truck I'm thinking about selling. Anyone sold a car on ebay before? Or is that way too much of a pain in the ass to deal with?Comment -

#19Originally posted by hoopster42if you are a strong negotiator, not just a good one, you could have gotten over $2000 from the dealer just by playing that gm i spoke of
I really don't want to meet and deal with people looking to buy a car with 250,000 miles on it.....gotta be some people....that....let's say.....BTJ wouldn't approve of.
I think these kind of cars get wholesaled out to some mass buyer, and maybe shipped to Mexico or something ?
they sure don't go on the lot at Carmax.
Carmax misses stuff when buying cars, so I'd never buy from them. Prices are high, too. I really think they prey on poor people by giving them credit they can't really afford.
I suspect Carmax is not doing too well, lately ?Comment -
