#4The best handicappers were in the 70's and earlier.............why?
Because the numbers were much weaker and the game was much more easily beatable.
The money in this business today is best made by scalpers, middlers, contest players, forum owners, and touts..........not "handicappers".Comment -

#5seems to me that the public has tons more info on games, conditions ect than in the 80's or earlier......
I would think the information gap between Vegas and the Public has decreased in a huge way.
the sharp guys in the 70's had phone networks and "inside guys" to supply last minute info, which brought them closer to have the knowledge of the head linesmen in Vegas.... but the rest of the public was in the dark, they may not even know about an injury that happened the night before a big game...
we have guys on this board that get text messages from inside the clubhouse of spring trainging MLB games.....Comment -

#6Make no mistake about it, pre-1980 was much, much easier for the handicapper to make money.
Sharps and wiseguys knew how to find info on games that 99.9% of the betting public had no idea about.Comment -

#12Here's another one, what about Pittsburgh Phil?
This guy was making MILLIONS back in the 1890s/1900s beating the bookmakers at the track.
They were writing about him in the papers and everything. Check out this article from 1894:
