Poor OJ.... He could face life in prison over this frame up.

O.J. in court to face charges in Vegas armed robbery case

    Nov. 8, 2007

LAS VEGAS -- O.J. Simpson arrived at a courthouse Thursday for a hearing to determine whether he will face trial on charges he and others robbed two sports memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas hotel room.

The former football star wore a tan suit, white shirt and dark sunglasses as he made his way into the court surrounded by a contingent of lawyers and about a dozen uniformed officers.

Simpson also will be facing years of doubts and questions about his 1995 acquittal on murder charges during the two-day hearing. In Simpson's mind, according to a close friend, the latest charges are rooted in Simpson being found not guilty in the 1994 slayings of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman.

"He believes he's being tried for that now," said Tom Scotto, 45, a North Miami Beach, Fla., auto body shop owner.

The men arrested in the Sept. 13 incident were brought together by Scotto's wedding. Simpson and co-defendants Clarence "C.J." Stewart and Charles Ehrlich face 12 charges, including kidnapping, armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and coercion.

A kidnapping conviction could result in a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole. An armed robbery conviction could mean mandatory prison time.

"He's taking this serious," Scotto said. "It is serious."

No one disputes that Stewart, Ehrlich and former co-defendants Michael McClinton, Walter Alexander and Charles Cashmore went with Simpson and California collectibles broker Tom Riccio to meet memorabilia dealers Alfred Beardsley and Bruce Fromong in a casino hotel room.

Simpson, 60, has maintained that he wanted to retrieve items he claimed had been stolen from him by a former agent, including the suit he wore the day he was acquitted in Los Angeles.

The case is likely to pivot on Simpson's contention that he didn't ask anyone to bring guns, that he didn't know anyone had guns and that no guns were displayed.

Three of Simpson's co-defendants have pleaded guilty or agreed to do so and are expected to testify against him.

Cashmore, 40, a journeyman laborer, said McClinton displayed a gun.

Alexander, 46, of Mesa, Ariz., told police after his Sept. 15 arrest that he and McClinton carried guns, but that he kept one in his waistband while McClinton displayed his as Beardsley and Fromong were frisked.

"O.J. said `hey, just bring some firearms,"' Alexander said, according to a transcript of his tape-recorded statement to detectives.

McClinton, 49, of Las Vegas, who later turned two handguns over to police and surrendered his concealed weapons permit, is expected to bolster that account.

Nevertheless, the prosecution's case has certain weaknesses, including some unsavory witnesses.

Of the eight men who were in the room with Simpson, six have run afoul of the law before, with convictions for arson, theft, cocaine trafficking and assault among them.

Moreover, Simpson's lawyers have argued that the men who turned against him lied to win generous plea bargains for themselves.

"He's got a bunch of people making up anything they can make up, just to get out of trouble," Scotto said.

Simpson and the others are likely to be bound over for trial "because the burden of proof is such that all they have to show is that some evidence suggests a crime occurred," said Tom Pitaro, a veteran Las Vegas defense lawyer who teaches trial advocacy at the Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Clark County District Attorney David Roger and prosecutor Chris Owens declined comment on their plans for the hearing.

Jody Armour, a law professor at the University of Southern California, said it was unlikely that the defense will tip its hand much, and said no one will be able to avoid an undercurrent of deja vu with Simpson sitting in court.

"The subtext, from the defense standpoint, is going to be prosecutors trying for another bite at the O.J. apple," Armour said.

If/when he is convicted the judge will give him the maximum to make up for that idiot jury finding him "not guilty" on the murders. Do I care whether he is guilty or innocent this time? Not on your life.

                  Good for for you O.J.

It's good to see you aren't going to let the cops railroad you like this.

Simpson arraignment in Las Vegas expected to be brief -- but then again, this is O.J.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- O.J. Simpson and two co-defendants are expected to plead not guilty Wednesday to 12 charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas hotel room.

The former football star and his lawyers contend that no guns were displayed and that he intended only to retrieve items that had been stolen from him, including photographs, football awards and the suit he wore the day he was acquitted in 1995 of murdering his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Prosecutors allege the heist in Las Vegas netted tens of thousands of dollars of sports collectibles that bore no connection to Simpson.

Simpson, 60, of Miami, Clarence "C.J." Stewart and Charles "Charlie" Ehrlich were bound over for trial this month after a 3 1/2 -day preliminary hearing, which featured testimony from witnesses and three former co-defendants who took plea deals in return for their testimony.

Defense attorneys lost a bid during the preliminary hearing to get any charges dismissed, despite claims they were based on accounts by con artists and crooks.

Simpson's attorney, Yale Galanter, said Wednesday's arraignment should be brief.

"If this goes like all other standard arraignments, it will last about five minutes," Galanter said.

But he added: "There's nothing in this case that has been standard."

Clark County District Judge Jackie Glass will juggle schedules for prosecutors, defense lawyers and herself in picking a trial date.

Galanter said he would seek a date "sometime next year" but declined to be more specific.

Defense lawyers may challenge an amended complaint filed Monday listing Stewart and Ehrlich as possible witnesses, but not Simpson.

Attorneys for Stewart and Ehrlich did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

A spokesman for Clark County prosecutor David Roger said that co-defendants are routinely listed as possible witnesses in criminal cases and that Simpson's name would be added to the list.

"It was a clerical oversight," spokesman Dan Kulin said.

The new document makes no changes in the charges against the three men but drops former co-defendant Michael McClinton as a defendant. McClinton -- who pleaded guilty to reduced felony charges and testified that he took guns to the Sept. 13 confrontation with sports collectibles dealers Bruce Fromong and Alfred Beardsley -- is on the list of 78 potential trial witnesses.

Neither Stewart, 53, a Simpson friend and golfing buddy from North Las Vegas, nor Ehrlich, 53, a friend from Miami, are accused of wielding weapons during the suspected heist.

AP Special Correspondent Linda Deutsch contributed to this report.

The cops are picking on poor O.J. again by trying to pin some bogus charge on him.

DA alleges Simpson violated terms by trying to contact co-defendant

LAS VEGAS -- O.J. Simpson was taken into custody Friday in Florida and will be brought before a judge next week on allegations that he violated terms of his bail in a Las Vegas armed robbery case, court officials said.

Clark County District Attorney David Roger alleges that in a November voice message, Simpson told his bail bondsman to contact co-defendant Clarence "C.J." Stewart and express frustration about testimony given at hearing where Simpson, Stewart and a third man were ordered to stand trial.

"I'm tired of this [expletive]," Simpson is quoted as saying in a transcript that was included in Roger's motion to revoke bail filed Friday. "Fed up with [expletive] changing what they told me. All right?"

Simpson had been instructed by Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Joe M. Bonaventure in September not to have any contact with anyone involved in the case -- not even by "carrier pigeon." Simpson was to go before District Court Judge Jackie Glass at 9 a.m. Wednesday. "We understand he's in the custody of his bail bondsman in Florida right now and will be brought to Las Vegas for the hearing," said Elana Pitaro, a clerk for Glass.

WSVN-TV in Miami showed video of Simpson walking through Miami International Airport near an American Airlines counter Friday. He was wearing a golf visor, golf shirt and jeans, talking on a cell phone while a man accompanied him.

"I can't talk to you guys. I cannot talk to you guys," Simpson said before boarding the plane.

Simpson's lawyer Yale Galanter did not return phone messages seeking comment. A bail bondsman at You Ring We Spring bail bonds in North Las Vegas declined to comment.

Simpson was freed Sept. 19 on $125,000 bail following his arrest on allegations he and several friends burst into a Las Vegas hotel room and robbed two sports memorabilia dealers at gunpoint.

Simpson has maintained that he was retrieving items that belonged to him. He and the two other men are scheduled to stand trial April 7.

Roger alleges that Simpson left the voice message with bail bondsman Miguel Pereira for Stewart on Nov. 16, two days after Bonaventure ruled that Simpson, Stewart and Charles Ehrlich, should stand trial on 12 charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery.

A lawyer for Stewart said his client was never contacted.

Simpson, Stewart and Ehrlich each pleaded not guilty Nov. 28 to kidnapping, armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, coercion and conspiracy charges. A kidnapping conviction could bring a life sentence with the possibility of parole. An armed robbery conviction carries mandatory prison time.

Three other former co-defendants, Walter Alexander, Michael McClinton and Charles Cashmore, agreed to plea deals and testified against Simpson at the evidentiary hearing in Las Vegas.

Simpson has maintained that no guns were displayed during the confrontation, that he never asked anyone to bring guns and that he did not know anyone had guns. He has said he intended only to retrieve items that had been stolen from him by a former agent, including the suit he wore the day he was acquitted of murder in 1995 in the slayings of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman.

They are really sticking it to poor innocent O.J. Simpson.

Judge doubles Simpson's bail to $250,000

LAS VEGAS -- An angry judge doubled O.J. Simpson's bail to $250,000 on Wednesday for violating terms of his original bail by attempting to contact a co-defendant in his armed robbery case.

Simpson, clad in jail attire, grimaced as the amount was announced and meekly acknowledged that he understood.

"I don't know Mr. Simpson what the heck you were thinking -- or maybe that's the problem -- you weren't," Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass told Simpson.

"I don't know if it's just arrogance. I don't know if it's ignorance. But you've been locked up at the Clark County Detention Center since Friday because of arrogance or ignorance -- or both."

Glass said that the initial court order to not contact other defendants was clear and she warned that if anything else happened Simpson would be locked up.

That kind of opinion is why I think OJ is going to do some time... sorry The "Dream Team" with John Cochran couldn't save O.J. on this one... Everybody Black,White,Yellow, Brown, Purple, knows O.J. got away with those murders... Then the kicker is he comes out with that book "If i did it" just to put salt in the wound. 10 felonys for anybody is bad news but for a black man in america famous or not, No chance in hell he beats this. some of the charges will be dropped but the Juice is going to do some time!! I never say this but This is a LOCK!! (Anybody know a book that has odds on this)

This is from a Article in the LA Times (if you google search OJ simpson then hit news this pops up) Simpson arrived at court in a black SUV and strode quickly toward the entrance, ignoring the shouts of a man carrying a banner reading "Jesus saves sinners from hell."

"The problem is not that you got your stuff back. The problem is you killed your wife," the man screamed.

On Friday O.J. Simpson will be sent to prison, perhaps for the rest of his life.

It’s quite possible this is the first you’ve heard of it.

Not so much that Simpson had again gotten into trouble with the law. Most people knew that. Far fewer are aware the sentencing is this week.

The former football star, actor, commercial pitchman and defendant in the “Trial of the Century” that once defined media excess, is hardly newsworthy anymore.

It’s a judge for the state of Nevada (not California) that will lay down the penalty for the crimes of armed robbery and kidnapping (not double murder). The sentence will be between six years to natural death (not two life terms).

Still, he is going away for a long time. Experts expect a minimum of 18 years for the 61-year-old. Outside of the extreme partisans on the ends of the Simpson spectrum, though, America no longer seems to care.

In 1995, the reading of the verdict of whether Simpson murdered his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman temporarily shut down America. The interest was so great that work places stopped, strangers crowded around public televisions and schools announced the news over the intercom.

Everyone of age remembers where they were when they heard the acquittal of O.J. Every one has seen the video of the decision.

There was the court clerk stumbling over Simpson’s name before saying “not guilty of the crime of murder.”

There was attorney Johnnie Cochran pumping his fists in celebration as he stood behind Simpson. There was O.J. breaking into a small smile before mouthing “thank you” to the jury as Cochran patted him on the back. There was fellow attorney Robert Kardashian looking so stunned that some took it as proof of Simpson’s guilt.

And finally there were the sobbing sounds of the Goldman family as the camera made a slow pan across the courtroom.

It was one of the most dramatic and memorable moments of the 1990s. Simpson, depending on your point of view, could go down as the decade’s most divisive, infamous, railroaded, evil or misunderstood figure.

Then there were the images of people reacting to the verdict – outside that Los Angeles courthouse, in restaurants, in Times Square. Whites were almost overwhelming disgusted at the acquittal; blacks were almost overwhelmingly celebratory.

It was a window into America and how race and class sharply influence a person’s view of the justice system. It made many take a new look at everything. The impact of that moment would not subside for years.

The murders, the low-speed chase and the lengthy trial had consumed the country. It was the first reality TV show of the ’90s, a perfect cocktail for the bottomless pit of cable news.

Its impact was vast. It spawned a series of supporting characters, brands and phrases. Judge Ito, Kato Kaelin and Mark Fuhrman; the white Bronco and Bruno Magli shoes; “absolutely, 100 percent not guilty” and “If it does not fit, you must acquit.”

It was the first introduction to DNA evidence for many.

It bolstered the genre of modern crime reporting; saturation coverage for case after case after case from Laci Peterson to Natalee Holloway to Caylee Anthony.

With Simpson everyone had an opinion – many emotional, many firmly held to this day.

A civil trial found him responsible for the murders and forced him to turn over almost all his money to the Brown and Goldman families. There was a constant stream of new allegations, interviews and counterarguments.

Simpson went so far as to pen the book “If I Did It,” which was so controversial the publisher was fired just for considering the project. (The Goldmans won access to the manuscript and published it as a confession.)

                                                                    That happened June of 2007.

Yet just 18 months later, Simpson is headed to prison and suddenly most of America no longer cares.

His last trial was largely ignored. The cable shows drew low ratings and returned to something else. When he was found guilty two months ago, on the 13th anniversary of the Brown-Goldman case, people barely paused to acknowledge it. The passion (either pro or con) for O.J. appears to be gone forever.

Simpson’s new lawyer blasted the verdict as “payback” for the previous acquittal. It failed to rally supporters. Conversely, many people who once angrily felt that Simpson had gotten away with murder only mildly celebrated the new verdict.

Perhaps it’s Simpson fatigue. Perhaps it’s a desire to avoid fighting the battles of the past. Perhaps it’s because the new case was so dull, sad and bizarre – one of the items Simpson took was the suit he wore the day of the original verdict.

Perhaps it’s the wars and the economy and uncertainty that makes caring so much about some sorry old felon seem a waste of time.

Perhaps it’s that no matter where you stood on the original case, you’d have to agree that anyone who survives a double-homicide trial has to be a fool to get a parking ticket, let alone have anything to do with an armed robbery.

Whatever it is, it’s a long way from that October day in 1995, when the People of California v. Orenthal James Simpson stopped the nation in its tracks and then nearly busted it apart. Back then you’d never have believed that he’d one day face a potential life sentence and most people would just shrug.

The one-time most famous defendant in the country, the center of a media storm like almost no other, the touchstone figure of a decade, will head off to a Nevada prison for perhaps the rest of his life.

Due to his celebrity, he’ll spend it in solitary.

                                                                    Dan Wetzel is Yahoo!
