NFL changes OT Rules, 28-4 vote
    It's offical.........

The NFL has changed its overtime rules for playoff games.
Starting next season, if a team wins the coin toss and then kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball.

If the game is still tied after that, play will continue under the current sudden-death rules. Should the team winning the toss immediately score a touchdown, then the game is over.

Now the coaches after winning the coin toss will prefer to kick if the defenses are still strong. Historically the OT has been close to 50-50, after this change the kicking team will have the edge.

stupid rule..the team's got to set up and not let the other team get a FG...if they can't then they deserve to lose

If you are going to go down this road, you could just give the team that wins the toss the ball at the 20.

If the kickoff line get too advanced, the onside kick becomes a real possibility.

I guess it's ok. But, honestly how many playoffs games go into overtime? Not many. So, we could go 3 years without ever seeing this.

I didn't understand why the Vikings where one of the teams to vote against it, when they where on the loosing end last year. Guess they thought they could use the present rule to their advantage

I like the rule. No more cheap wins.

Still plenty of room for improvement. Namely, that the rule is different in the playoffs versus regular season.

If the game goes into OT, they should play another quarter, or time-modified quarter. Put the outcome of the game into the players hands, not a coin flip...

Why playoff games only? Different rules for the regular season and the playoffs? So IF you make it to the playoffs and lose the toss and kick off, you will not lose the game if the opposition kicks a FG, but IF this happens in the regular season, and the same scenario occurs, you can lose a game that could cost you a playoff spot. Now that makes a hell of a lot of sense. Boy how stupid can you get. Talk about half-assing something.

Couple things from this new poster....

First, QH has it right here. Most of the bottom playoff seeds have to win to get in well before the playoffs actually start, so in essence Game 17 at the very least is a playoff game, so what makes that game so much less important than a playoff game. Maybe we should ask Pittsburgh when they won the SB as a 6 seed if the last couple games mattered just as much as any playoff game.

That having been said, the rule is complete garbage. You want the ball in OT after losing the toss--stop somebody. The NFL should ask for a blankey and a pacifier cause thats what this rule does to its league. What 45 yrds to go suddenly has become 5 feet? Or hey ya know it is possible to cause a turnover--werent there at least 8 total in the NO/Minny game that caused all this? And Ill bet one of those teams had a 3 and out at some point?

You have 60 minutes to decide a game. Thats enough time to win it. What happens after this isnt enough? Does the rule start applying to the 4th quarter because "hey Team X held the ball for the last 9 min of the game, broke the tie at the buzzer and we lost. Its just to hard to stop them or cause a turnover. We want a chance with the ball too! They only did kick a FG."

The way the NFL is going with their rules changes, a blankey and pacifier will be standard issue to each member of the team. How far is the NFL away from flag football? You can add a "get out of jail free" card to the standard issue.
