    Phil Steele's Power Sweep Newsletter
Does anyone subscribe to Phil Steele's Power Sweep newsletter? My buddy swears by this newsletter and said that it has been doing well this year. I am in agreement with most of you here that touts are worthless. I'm trying to convince him not to be pursuaded by the *rated picks but he thinks i'm crazy. Personally, I like to do my own handicapping for the big 12 mainly. I just want to show him that the majority of handicappers do not rely on a tout. He said that this weekend was Phil Steele's big 5* weekend but I haven't even asked him who this big play is. I'm guessing it's a Washington or a Tennessee. I would be curious if anyone else has this pick so I can compare it with his pick to see if Phil Steele gives out different information to his clients. I will ask him tomorrow who the big 5* is. Good luck to everyone tomorrow.

I don't know anything about Phil Steele, so the following is giving my experience with a pick service that uses weighted plays, we call them stars, I have seen others who use *. So, what I am about to say is not an endorsement of PHil Steele as I have no experience with Mr. Steele.

I follow a pick service that gives out weighted plays, they call them stars, from 5 to 100 stars. Following this service, I have multiplied my bank by 15, and I started the first week after the all star break. This pick service gives out baseball, NFL, CFL, and college football picks. I also do my own handicapping, and I religiously follow trifectabx's OVER/UNDER edge plays in the baseball handicapping area of this forum.

I find using a weighting for games which have a greater E.V. (Expected Value) is far superior to flat betting, IF you know what the E.V. (Expected Value) is. To make a blanket statement that using weighted plays (whether you use * or stars or whatever) is not "good" is not true. It all depends on the pick service. I joined the pick service I follow after I heard about them from someone I trust and I checked out their results for the last five years. I'm not touting them here, so I won't give out a link. I'm just saying that weighted plays are better than flat betting if you know what the Expected Value of the play is and the weighting reflects the higher Expected Value. From my experience the pick service I follow loses very few 50, 100, or 200 star plays. I think we have lost 3 this season (remember I joined at the all star break). Our minimum bet is 5 stars, I would say the "average" bet is probably 20 stars, maybe 15 stars. Each bettor is given a $ amount per star to use based on the size of their bank. I know people who use $5 a star and I know other people who use $100 per star.

One thing that I like about this service is that they help their clients with money management. They tell you what $ amount to use per star based on the size of your bank and they get mad at you if you overbet your bank. They have yelled at me for overbetting my bank, even on days when we won. LOL.

I don't want to post a link here so that I am not accused of being a shill for this service. But, anyone is free to PM me.

Curious , if you feel like it post the picks your service gives you right before kickoff . I'm very interested to see if they are on the same page as the majority high % likes . If you dont post em before kickoff or shortly thereafter dont worry about it . Another words not when the score is 14 - 0 . thanks

I can post them after the game has started. I can tell you right now that our plays are not in line with the majority of people on this board.

I use powersweep, and have found there college 4 and 3 star pick to do very well. Also there underdog play of the week is a soild pick. 4 star picks have been hitting 66-45-2 the last 9 years. Not bad for a $8 pick sheet. Phil does a great job IMO and i have read most if not all of his stuff. As for the BIG 5 star play Sat, it releases at 11:15am so call your friend after that

              Phil Steals

Its pure junk. I received it for 5 years and the 5*'s were 50% at best. As I wrote in an earlier thread, if you subscribed to Power Sweep during 2001, when 9/11 hit, many schedules were changed during that week. His newsletter DIDNT ADDRESSS the changes and had the games that were ORIGINALLY supposed to be played written up. Conclusion there is that its written well in advance, probably based on his faulty systems. It used to come to me in MI and FL on TUESDAY...impossible to write, print, and mail in one day so Im pretty sure the whole thing is written over the summer before the season. If you want to put 5X your typical bet down on a game based on that premise...good luck to your ace sir.

I'll try to post in the college football area. I have a lot of plays going and I'm not sure what the game times are for all of them, but I will try to keep the picks updated. I will title the thread "Curious plays, Sat 9-15-07"

thank for the info. i ended up taking florida atlantic based on my own handicapping. i told my dad it was my big play and he laughed when i said florida atlantic. he ended up taking them for a couple units and is thanking me now!! Like I said, my buddy thinks Phil's newsletter is great and so far this year the star picks are doing well. based on the picks listed above, it looks like they are doing well today and then add in florida atlantic and they are doing great.
