My buddy had his brother call him at our job well over a decade ago and my buddy acted like his brother was telling him that their house got robbed, when they were roomies after college. Could be a good excuse if your coworkers know your living situation, as far as wife or girlfriend is concerned.

I currently don't work but when I did my go-to excuse was that my sister was having a baby. Used it twice with no resistance. I don't have a sister.

It was close. It was like 8 months later. It was some bullshit job I don't even think they thought twice. If I was questioned I was going to tell them it was my other sister.

I take it off months in advance for a "relatives" wedding. I have a policy of not discussing much with co-workers about my personal life and don't lead on like I even care about sports. Works every year
