The quake was measured at a 4.4 magnitude, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and hit about one mile from Pico Rivera, Calif., and about 11 miles from the Los Angeles Civic Center.

It was like a 747 flying over your house. It rattled a bit but no damage. Maybe a glass fell off the table.

You live in a hurricane area. There is more chance of dying in a hurricane in Florida than an earthquake in Cali. The casualties from hurricanes are much more than earthquakes in the US.

Earthquakes are totally random and unexpected. You can't handicap an earthquake.
On the other hand, anyone dying in a hurricane either...
1. Wanted to ride it out OR
2. Was broke as fuk and couldn't get out
Too much time and warning to get caught in a hurricane. Shame on you if your in either category above.

It has nothing with to do with handicapping. A house built out of wood, plywood and drywall (90% of the houses built in the US) is more vulnerable to hurricanes than earthquakes. Because of its lightweight construction the plywood will deflect with the motion of the earthquake and not collapse, unless of course it's built at the edge of a cliff on unstable soil and tumbles over. But a hurricane because it is sustained for quite some time and throws projectiles at a house is more vulnerable to hurricane damage because the house is lightweight and can be blown out of its foundation if not properly designed. This is why most of the damage in earthquakes is done on tall buildings made of masonry or badly built reinforced concrete and most of the damage in hurricanes is done on lightweight framed construction like wood framed buildings with plywood and drywall.

Those 4.4 ers are good actually they are a little release of tension. When there are no 4.4 ers or similar quakes for a long time is when to worry.

I live about a mile from the center... It had a couple hard shakes and that was it! But this same fault line did some damage in 1987 so hopefully it was just releasing pressure!
