    Hello
I am new to handicapping and wanted to introduce myself. I've been lurking for awhile but I finally joined. I bet small because I am still learning and don't want to get way ahead of myself. I tried the search feature for links, books, etc for becoming a better handicapper but came up short. Can anyone suggest anything?

How's it going Chris, glad to see you start posting. It's good that you are pacing yourself, what I would recommend also if you aren't already is to record your picks. Keep detailed records of whatever you're betting, stay within a small % of your roll, and start tracking your progress that way. It's also good to shop around for the best available lines, using sbrlines will enable you to save time doing this. Good luck and hope to see you posting in the capping forums!

Chris, welcome, I'm fairly new too and also from Indiana (E-ville). The best advice I can give you starting out is stick to one sport initially and watch as many games as possible. If you're not at least somewhat familiar with the team - do not bet on or against them. I've learned that I usually win when I bet on or against teams that I am familiar with and normally lose when I bet based on others' opinions on teams...........this is just my advice

Also, betting on the NFL is extremely tricky at times (as any team can have a good showing on any given night - happens more in NFL than in any other sport). Again, just my opinion............

Thanks for the advice. My plan is to just stick to NFL and NCAA football since I follow those religiously. Those picks are all based on my opinion and no one else. Besides I wouldn't know who is a winner and who is a loser here anyway.

I never pay for picks at all, and I do not blindly follow someone else's picks who posts here. I have a lot of free time to devote to this, so there is no need for me to ride anyone else's conclusions when I'm comfortable in my own decision making.

An area you should focus on is finding the best possible lines, don't limit yourself to one book, check out the SBR Posters Poll at the top right and check out what each different book offers relative to your betting needs. Then when you find a good line across a certain book, you can bet it right away. As far as a link, check out SBR Odds. http://www.sbrodds.com/ There is also a scoreboard as well, it's a free service they're constantly working on improving. There are other pay services out there, but right now this is something I use.

Hope this helps some, good luck.

A key piece of handicapping is: don't be over-influenced by what happened the last game. Most bettors let that one game be the main determinant of their bet, as it looms biggest in their minds, being the most recent.

That said, I'm on the same play you are in the NFl, Carolina.
Not just their last game, but that Houston beat only KC, a team that Herm Edwards has destroyed.

Also, college is a better play than the NFL. Softer lines on some games than the rock hard numbers on the NFL

For some reason college is harder to follow. Like the Ohio St. game last week. I have seen Akron play and wouldn't know how they would stack up to the Buckeyes. I won't bet the game without a certain amount of knowledge. I also think I am missing out on an opportunity this way as well.

Also, I tend to stay away from rivalry games and huge spreads. Since the game can go either way.

Good to have a fellow midwesterner on here Chris.

Experience is the only way you get better. Anyone and everyone who has ever bet on sports has been a losing bettor at one point or another. Most remain losing bettors b/c they never learned from their mistakes. You'll pick things up over time....There is a ton of advice one could give but the one thing I would say is to listen to everyone no matter how lousy they are. There is something to take away from each and every poster.

                                Best of luck.....

Welcome Chris. crazyl gave what is probably the best first piece of advice after avoiding scams. Shop, shop and shop. New players eventually have enough close losses and pushes that they start looking for the extra half point. If you can cut that off your learning curve you are ahead of the game.
