EU Extends France’s Online Gambling Deadline

The European commission (EC) has extended the deadline for France to October 29th 2007 to modify its restrictive online gambling legislation.Alongside with other European countries such as Sweden, France has been criticized by the EC for blocking other EU operators from entering its markets by allowing only native gambling companies to thrive in the country.

The European Commission is concerned that France is breaching article 49 of the European Treaty, which allows for a free market in the service sector within the EU, as the French government currently only permits two local gambling operators to offer their services over the Internet, PMU and Française des Jeux,.

The EC originally demanded the altering of France’s gambling laws before the end of August 2007 to allow Internet providers to post a message informing players that they were about to enter a site that was not permitted in France. The providers that do not stick to the system will be fined €75,000.
