because most bats are custom made such as 36" 30 ounces and such, use to be there bats might not meet the specs of each individual player and they choked up to balance the bat and have controll of it. plus there is a veriity of knobs you can get on bats these days, Barry Bonds is one of the last I remember choking up.,,,as Julio Franco was the opposite and had 2 fingers over and below the knob to get more wrist action in his swing;
