Call me crazy but Im thinking these guys will suprise people this year. The Padres finished 4th in the NL West last year and won 75 games. They have the best hitter in the game, and some young players that have freedom to grow with hardly any pressure on them.
Whats To Like: A.Gonzalez is the best Hitter in the game. Imagine if he played in a little league park like Philly or Fenway, he'd hit 50 with ease. He's averaged 38 HR's and a .278 batting average the last 2 years in the worst hitters park in baseball. I like their speedy shortstop (E.Cabrera) leading off and the hit-n-run/bunt specialist (D.Eckstien) batting second, it adds an old school feel to their lineup. It reminds me of the good old days of baseball before Canseco and his buddies ruined it. Kyle Blanks is expected to do some damage but he is still unproven.
Mat Latos is youngster to keep an eye on. If he pitches anywhere near his potential the Padres rotation is in pretty good shape. C.Young and K.Correia are two solid starters that have been around and should keep them in games. J.Garland will eat up innings and get the ball to their under rated bullpen.
H.Bell, L.Gregerson, and M.Adams are 3 solid arms in the Padres bullpen.
Whats not to Like: Their Outfield, Blanks has potential, but the Hairston Brothers, Gwynn Jr., and Venable get a big
from me as a whole. Id like to see the professional hitter Matt Stairs get some atbats but he'll most likely just pinch hit.
They dont have a dominant starting pitcher, C.Young is close but he struggles at times. I see these guys going through a couple longs slumps without a "stopper" in the rotation and a young, inconsistent outfield. They say C. Headley can hit but Iv'e yet to see it. Their catchers are nothing to get excited about.
There are whispers of a firesale in the near future if they dont get off to a hot start this year which is never a good thing.
Recap: I'd feel safer having cash in Brock Landers safe than betting on the Padres Team Total this year. You just cant be sure who will be on the team 3 months from now to make it worth betting. I personally will look for good lines to take the Padres when C.Young, K.Correia, and M.Latos are starting.
