DAMNIT what should i do with my life this coming september!
man im so confused on wtf i should do with my life this coming september. graduated from college a year and a half ago in MECHANICAL MANUFACTURING, otherwise known as TOOL & DIE. the car industry and everything as a whole in that field is literally fukkin dead. cant land an apprenticeship job or even a regular full time job with any company, they are all struggling. put it this way, everyone i graduated with in college they're not working in tool & die, they all went back to school or just working elsewhere. therefore i graduated in a shitty field, just my luck.

anyways a little over a year ago i landed a job with the federal govnernment (great!) with canada post. i applied for this job right before i graduated, even though its not in my field but whatever i heard they are great to work for. my wage there is fukkin 24 bucks an hour. AMAZING WAGE! was getting steady part time hours, now i havent gotten any hours for months. they keep sending me union letters saying how they're trying to save the corporation, and how the amount of mail they get nowadays is bad thanks to emails, cellphones etc. im still employed and under payroll, but i get no hours...

now i realized i gotta make a huge move in september...

    a) head back to college in september, maybe even january cause courses start at that time too. problem is i dont know wtf to take, and i hate school! i spent 3 hours traveling 5 days a week on shitty public transit for 2 1/2 years straight

    b) try to find a full-time job elsewhere (dont feel like pissing away 10 + grand again in school

man the economy is so fukked up...

Work night crew at the supermarket - they'll pay probably $20/hr.

If not, there's always glory holes.

Or, collect empty Opa Opa bottles and return them for deposit - the deposit is TWO DOLLARS EACH.

I threw one away a couple weeks ago without realizing there was a deposit...

Take grad school classes part-time and work part-time. That will be your best investment in the long run.

keep working until you either find something you like or you figure out what you want to study

don't go back to school if you don't know what you want to study because you either could waste time/money with something you later find out you don't like or you find out you lack the motivation to do well because it is something you lose interest in

by the time you figure out what you want to do you will have the motivation to succeed. best advice is to put yourself out there and see what you like. volunteer somewhere for a few weeks if you have to in order to find your direction or just ask a lot of question of people in fields you might like.

Consider working in a hospital. Janitor has little or no qualifications but pays well in that environment. You could also go back to school to become an attendant, nurses assistant or whatnot. I think it takes a little under a year and the pay is pretty good $15+ an hour since you're in Canada. They are always looking for people at hospitals as the staff are overworked. If you're more ambitious consider actually becoming a registered nurse. You'll always have work and it pays well.

Yeah cuz the economy was amazing when Dubya was manning the helm. Unreal how short some people's memories are. The economy relies on a ton of different factors, and the President of the US is a pretty insignificant part of it, Republican or Democrat.

There are jobs to be had out there now, just gotta explore options and be patient. Don't go back to school if you don't like school. You could end up being there for years and end up with a marginally better job outlook when you're out. I know a lot of grad students who can't find something in their field right now.

Kav, I really don't know why you're stressed out. Instead of sitting around getting stoned you did something with your life and got a degree in a worthwhile field. I don't really understand how the auto repair/manufactoring industry is a dying field.

gotta make some moves man, im 23. i dont know about auto repair industry cause thats for mechanics mostly, but for me this is the best way to sum it up...

put it this way, instead of the employer paying me $20-25 an hour as a millwrighter, cnc operator or die maker etc. alot of shops over here are closing down and moving to china, mexico or india where they pay them half the wage to do the same shit. tough times bro, tough times... i gotta move on, i guess it wasnt meant to be.

I'm with ya Kav. I went to college and graduated with a marketing degree. Went to work at a large hotel because I felt that I had a long term career path with them. Now I see that's not the case so I've been looking for another job since October. Thought about getting my MBA but will have to take out more student loans. Probably the way to go right now because unemployment is high and everyone is looking for jobs.

All I can say is follow the money...whatever the job or industry may be. We just had a 20+ year party with the credit expansion, housing market, and the public given the opportunity to "live like the Jones'", ect. Now, we have the "hangover" from the party. Bear down and follow the money, get out of debt, and get in a postion where you can live even if it means lower pay, ect....we are really in a time of survival of the fittest.
