"A Taliban commander, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said on Saturday: "We got more than $20 million dollars from them (the Seoul government). With it we will purchase arms, get our communication network renewed and buy vehicles for carrying out more suicide attacks.""

Ive been stationed on the DMZ in Korea (1979/80), and there aint no active duty assignment worldwide that is as hated as being stationed there.Those bastards on the North would always be popping off rounds at us, although way to far to actually hit anything with small arms fire, it was a regular occurance getting shot at there.

Im not so sure about saving s korea from the north, when I was there the s korean troops were some bad as$ mfers. At least the ones I was around,they could hold their own against anyone. I really would like to believe that its not true about the south paying off the Taliban.

At least South Korea did something proactive to quickly get their guys back. If you were there instead of the Koreans, they mide as well lop your head of on day one because this sad country won't do jack shit to get you released.

But if your in the practice of kidnapping for extortion and you have countries x, y and z. You know country Z pays well to get hostages back and countries x and y don't pay at all. Who are you going to try to kidnap next?

Didn't the US trade arms for hostages back in the 80's?

More recently, Libya was paid quite a pretty penny to release the Bulgarians, around $400 million.

I don't think the South Koreans are too worried about it since they will be getting out of where they have no business being in the first place.

i think it's funny how right when n. korea agrees to shut down the reactors (thanks to great negotiating by president bush, although no one will give him props for anything GOOD he does), they pull this crap...when you pay for hostages or make other negotiations, it just leads to more kidnappings...it's a horrible thing.

we should have let north korea blow them to pieces, those cocksuckers.
