    Roger Ebert: pretty sad
This is a pic of Roger Ebert on Oprah Winfrey show today. He lost his voice to cancer and its sad. Man, sure looks different than his days with Gene Siskel.

My best wishes go out to the guy. Does he have any motor control in the lower part of his face or did the removal of the jaw paralyze that part?

Very sad and unfortunate. Wonder if it affects his taste in movies?

No jaw - the article I read says he can't eat or drink, so he gets fed through a direct tube into his stomach. Sounds terrible, but he's in good spirits and has a younger black wife, so good for him...

He posts regularly to his blog about movies - he can certainly still do that (who better?)... and he is supposedly able to "speak" through a computer that uses his old voice samples to produce his current thoughts in his own actual voice, even though he can no longer speak. So that's a good thing.

The bottom line is that he is in VERY good spirits based on everything I've read about him since the cancer/surgeries, etc. and is making the best of his situation... He's an inspiration...

I read something today that he is now working closely with a British tech company that is trying to advance text to speech software so that the voices sound more human and are looking to use old tapes of his show to reproduce his voice. Pretty cool stuff.

I saw him on Oprah today. They are working on a new computerized voice for him that actually sounds like his real voice, but it's still computerized. He says he's still extremely happy.

Sad story. At the same time ya gotta admire the man's strength. What he has been through battling cancer as well as his day to day struggle now. I am certain it takes strength and courage to battle cancer. My heart goes out to him. May the almighty ease his suffering.
