It doesn't make him a genius, but it's a good move for everyone involved. Lebron doesn't actually profit off of jersey sales, the NBA does, so they are more than happy to honor this request.

There have been many great players that have worn many numbers. MJ is considered the unanimous best ever at this point and is in a different class than Bill Russell, hence why no one is too concerned above preserving Russell's number. Also, Lebron will finish his career being considered a far better player than Russell.
