Hey boys,
back at home from a quick road trip with my wife and son to Memphis, would like to share the particulars...
1st off i posted as often as i could from the mobile samsung instinct, like to stay in in touch when out like this.
Started off on Friday taking the day off work, ran a million errands before we left, even had time to make a video for SBR in the meantime. We got a great deal on a rental car, 57 bux for the weekend on a car from Hertz pretty much is unbeatable, we figure for these guerrilla style assault trips, its best to run someone else's car into the ground LOL Anyway, it was a good choice.
Driving down from Champaign to Memphis is about 5 1/2 hours with some stops to grab a snack and one tank of gas around blytheville, Arkansas. The key to a road trip like this is the tunes, we made sure the rental had satellite radio, as we have that in my wife's car and love our favorite channels, plus the ipod plug-in for our on the go playlists. Thats really cool as we called out 2 songs at a time, added em to the list, and had over 40 random songs we both wanted to hear after a certain point on the trip.
Got to horn lake (just south of memphis in Mississippi) about 11:30, went straight to Krystal burger as i didn't really eat down and got my favorite #1 with cheese, no pickles or mustard, chili cheese fries and a coke, DELICIOUS.
Bedded down at the drury inn there and were set.
Saturday was great, started out with lunch at Gus's fried chicken, which is in the top 2 or 3 in america for chicken, just incredible stuff, if you are in Memphis, DO NOT miss this place. Visited the Lorraine Motel where MLK was shot, my son is a big history buff for that sort of thing at the age of 8 already, then proceeded to Alfreds on Beale st. I have a buddy who moved from Champaign with his GF to Memphis last august to continue dental school down there and it was great to see him. Proceeded onto the Peabody hotel to show my son the duck show, if you know about the Peabody you know about the ducks. Checked out their perch on the roof, which was also used in a scene in the movie "the firm" with Tom Cruise, in fact all sorts of Memphis were used, and i've seen the movie many times, so its cool to see the locations, even though that was almost 20 years ago now. We checked out Mud island, where my buddy lives, and were amazed how cool that setup is there, one of the newer, nicest parts of Memphis and right on the river, i hope they've got the flooding figured out LOL
Anyway, the rest of the afternoon was spent at the Memphis children's museum, which was an enormous hit. We headed back to our hotel and hit the pool and hot tub while we debated what to have for dinner, and we decided to try out Pearl's oyster house right off of beale again in Memphis. http://www.pearlsoysterhouse.com/
Fukking Delicious meal again, i had the blackened catfish, my wife had the tilapia with crawfish and cream sauce, outstanding. Nothing better than a well prepared meal like that.
The rest of the night we watched the olympics in our room and just chilled, a ton was done, lots of walking and taking in the fresh air.
Sunday mostly consisted of the drive back, but we got in a morning swim and listened to the hockey game most of the way back, got home in time to see the USA tie it, my wife despair (She's Canadian), and then see them win in OT, anyway, good for her, i could have cared less LOL
All in all, a great quickie road trip, much needed warmer weather and great food.
Salud Boys!
