Half Baked Ideas To Make Sports Better
With snow still coming down I am forced to stay home and wait for 7pm for some action to start up. So I am going to make a post about a few ideas to make sports better. Not all of these would work but I am just going off the top of my head with little to no research so bare with me.

    NFL
Overtime We all know OT needs to be fixed. It just isn't right. It's too easy to get into FG range. When you do it comes down to a head case who doesn't fit on a football field trying to kick it through the posts. It's just bad and often very unexciting. You can't revert to the college OT because then we have inflated scores, inflated stats, and a different game really. However, what you can do is say you need 6 points to get the win. You can acheive the 6 points (obviously) with 2 FG's or a TD. This would make football much more exciting and would be fair to both teams. If you give up a TD first drive you deserve to lose, if you give up a FG then you get your turn with the ball. Just think of the scenarios. In OT teams trying to pound it in from 3 yards out with the game on the line. Would be fantastic for the game. If no team acheives the 6 points at the end of OT then the team leading wins. If still tied go into 2nd OT which brings me to my next point.

Also take out the ties. Even hockey abolished the tie. The NFL is the only major US sport you can now tie in. Just make the standard 15:00 quarters and every quarter is treated as halftime. (Example) Bears @ Packers tied 21-21. We go to OT, Packers win toss and take ball. After 15:00 of overtime it is 24-24 with both teams getting a FG. The Bears now receive in the 2nd OT with a shot to win it with a FG. However if the Packers had been winning 24-21 at the end of the 1st OT they are declared the winners.

    Celebrations
Why not? Why can't they celebrate. It is great for the fans and doesn't hurt anybody. Props brought onto the field should be out but why can't the guy do whatever he wants with the ball or FG post. Makes the game fun. Just dish out hefty fines for ones that are inappropriate or offensive (Moss mooning crowd).

    Quarterbacks
Take the skirt off of them. It is the NFL. These d-lineman work way to hard to get to the QB only to take a penalty for having their forearm make contact with the helmet. Sure helmet to helmet and other illegal hits should be out but this is football.

Going to smoke a joint and will be back with more. I know your all anxiously waiting.

All sports should have instant review off all calls. The technology is there.

About a foot and still coming down heavy. Problem is no plows are plowing the roads by me. I could go out but no one else is and my car will be all over the road.

              MLB
              Playoffs
Something is missing. Just 8 teams? The NFL has 12, NBA and NHL have 16. That is the way it should be. You can't give bye weeks in any sport other then the NFL so lets bump the amount of teams up to 12. 6 from each. 3 division winners, 3 wildcard winners. You seed them out like the NFL (division winners 1,2,3 in order of record) and then seed the wildcards. The #3 plays the #6, the #4 plays the #5. They play a best of 3 series all played at the higher seeds home stadium. This will push back the playoffs 2-3 days from its regular start time if you can start these games Monday. All nationally televised with a 1pm game, 4pm game, 7pm game, and 10pm game. After this round we are down to 4 teams in each league. The teams play a best of 5 series and then we are cut down to the ALCS and NLCS which brings us to a 7 game series. Then the WS as a 7 game series. Why can't this work?

              DH
Retarded. How can you have it in one league but not the other. I say either take it out or put it in. I don't really care, they will never agree on one side so lets just convert to 10 man lineups. 9 position players all hit and a DH. All pitchers hit, keeps the strategy of pinch hitting/double switches that we have in NL and puts it into the AL while keeping the lure of an extra hitter.

Everything else in baseball is pretty pure in my mind.

                NBA
                Defense
Does anyone play defense in the NBA anymore? Half the time these guys stand around and watch open layups get put in. So why not take out the defensive 3 seconds call? Yea, let the guy plant himself in the paint. Atleast someone will be standing in the way atleast. Also make a point of emphasis charges. Tell them to watch it closely and don't be afraid to call the charge.

                Lottery
This makes no sense to me. Why if the Nets finish the season with 7 wins to they still have to sweat out to see if they have a chance at the first pick. It just makes no sense.

                Transactions
Big Z got bought out by the Wiz and is headed back to Cle after 30 days. This happens every year. Trades today are more based on dumping contracts then being fair skill wise. It is just terrible. The whole NBA system needs to be gutted. The Cavs get to add Jamison for baisically nothing and keep Big Z. It ruins these small market teams who get jammed up so bad they need to baisically give away players for a little cap space.

The lottery was designed so that teams can't tank to guarantee themselves the 1st pick.

                    College BBall
**** that 96 team bullshit. If we are to extend the tournament lets do it right. 16 team play-in tournament. They play and the winner moves on to the Big Dance and gets seeded accordingly. So if a team on the bubble (Ok St) doesn't get in they win the play in tournament and then end up getting seeded as say a #10 seed. It's better then what we have now.

                    College Football
Yea we all know about the playoffs they need to have but people want this elaborate 16 or 8 team tournament. It just doesn't work like that in football. Take the top 4 teams and they can have a playoff. Go back a year and name me 5 or more teams that have a legit beef with not being in the Natl title game. You can't. You play the first two games early (1 week after the season) and then all the hype for the Natl title builds and it is the last game as normal. The Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, and etc don't get effected. You just reserve the two losers spots in the bowls. You solve the problem of having a TCU and a Boise going undefeated by saying any non BCS conference team must have a win over atleast 1 top 25 team and 2 BCS conference team. So if Boise plays a #14 Oregon and Rutgers and win both they can enter the playoffs. If not, they can't get in and will be in your regular bowl game. So this year it would be TCU/Bama/Texas/Cincy. Seed them by rank and play. If Bama beats TCU then you throw TCU in the Sugar Bowl and if Texas beats Cincy you throw Cincy in the orange bowl.

                    Why can't this work?

Yes, this is true but now we see teams tanking to get more balls. Remember the Celts a few years back? You give these teams with no shot at the first pick a shot and instead of having 2-3 teams tanking you have 7-8.

Use Olympic ice dimensions. The extra width makes the game 10 times better. Of course, you'll lose seats so this idea is silly.

About the NHL it's reallly ironic. The least popular sport in the US has the least to change in my mind.

Dunt contest, hardest shot contest, homerun derby and all sports all star games should all have a suffienct amount of prize money. Enough to make these guys want to win and go all out for the full game. They also would get bigger stars (LeBron etc) for the dunk contest and everything else. Just bribe them to play. Do you think Carmelo Anthony really cared about the $20,000 difference between prize money? Make it winning team gets $75,000 per player losing team gets $10,000. Tell me guys wouldn't try for an extra $65k.

                              NFL Late Game Clock Management.

Every coach needs to get a Madden pro on the sideline for late game clock management. Madden pros pretty much invented the late game touchdown walk the endzone to waste time concept". Madden pros know how not to waste clock. This would be key for bumbling idiots such as Andy Reid(long time abuser of clock mismanagement), Jim Zorn(never knew how to use late game timeouts.), Brad Chilly( If you saw the NFC Championship...)

Madden players are Pros at knowing when to go for the FG, calling timeouts, and overall clock management.

Gotta agree with the MLB Playoffs idea. I guess I wouldn't have disagreed while my Braves were winning 14 straight division titles, but now that their dynasty is over, it'd be nice to see them back in through an extended wild card or whatever.

Some interesting ideas here BJ. Like the NFL stuff, however I wouldn't add more teams to baseball's postseason. The season is long enough as it is, adding more teams is just more of a headache. I say if this is the way you want to go, make the regular season shorter to compensate. But we all know that will never happen because of the purity of the stats...

Speaking of this...what is your opinion on the TRUE Home Run King? When will baseball fix this? It's pretty obvious something has to be done.

I think the NBA, MLB, and NHL seasons are all too long. They will never shorten the length of schedule though.

True home run king is Hank. Of our era it is Griffey. If this guy didn't get hurt he would be the best player to ever play the game maybe and is the only dominant home run hitter not ever accuesd of steroids. Lets see what happens with Pujols. You have to take these guys who have taken steroids and put them in a different place in the hall of fame. 60 years from now, people need to know who they are and what they did. Simply leaving them out of the HOF won't do much.

Pretty solid analysis all around. Griffey is a great player and a stand up guy. I question Pujols, though no one can deny he is amazingly talented, I still have my doubts.
