    Trying to abstain from COFFEE
    DAY TWO in progress

Up until about 5-6 years ago I would have only a cup or two every week or so..............however, in the last five years no day has gone by where I have not consumed anywhere from 2-20 cups.

Better off without it, or severely limiting my consumption.

Tried kicking the habit many times in the past 5 years with no luck..............so maybe posting about it will motivate me.

Thanks in advance for the support, as well as the bashing, that I'm sure will be forthcoming.

As usual, Fish is stuck in the past.

Clinical researchers have demonstrated that caffeine consumption has benefits.

Among them---caffeine users have lower incidences of diabetes, parkinson's, colon cancer, it enhances mood behavior, is used to treat headaches, and has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of cavities in dental medicine.

And if you didn't want to read the link, here is a quote for you:

"Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful," says Tomas DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University, which conducts its own medical research and tracks coffee studies from around the world. "For most people, very little bad comes from drinking it, but a lot of good."

            Fish, I have a question.

After considering how clueless you are about caffeine consumption, I am curious. Do you still have rabbit ears on your television and you can't figure out why you don't have tv reception?

I understand the "possible" benefits of caffiene in "moderate" proportions, as I do the same with alcohol.

However, when one cannot stop at 1-1.5 cups of coffee and goes beyond that, it is not good at all and in my opinion far offsets any positive benefits from its consumption.

By the way, coffee is also good for the prevention of kidney stones.

If I can lay off cold turkey until March, I may try to have a couple sips here and there from Billsfan's morning coffee.

Keep in mind also that there other means other then coffee that one can consume caffiene.........and in all liklihood, a healthier way.............two that come to mind............

As for the coffee connection, I recommend that you continue to cut back. While coffee may prevent gallstone formation, it is also an addictive drug that can cause or worsen other troublesome health problems: headaches, anxiety, insomnia, cardiac arrhythmia (palpitations), high blood pressure, gastrointestinal and urinary disorders, prostate trouble and PMS. If you are interested in the positive effect of caffeine on gallstones, I suggest drinking green tea, which has less caffeine than coffee and a host of health advantages including protection from cancer.

                          Best of luck, Fishhead.

I cannot handle ANYTHING which perks me up. Caffeine really shakes me up and I get the jitters with a racing heart beat. The natural God given urge of energy is more than enough for me, actually resulting in anxiety, hypertension and OCD. I have a problem relaxing and I want to do everything needing done in life RIGHT NOW. I am trying to learn how to relax and to take it easy. Struggling with it.

                          Best to you.

The general has heart issues & should limit coffee to the 1-2 morning wake up cups per day. But Fish, coffee isn't really bad for you. I was a heavy drinker & I have quit cold turkey. I wouldn't say quit but I'm just taking a break & when I do drink again it's going to be in more moderation than before. The thing is, since I quit drinking alcohol I have consumed more coffee in the last 6 months than I have in 6 years.

Where I used to have a gin 'n' tonic in my hand constantly that has been replaced by Folgers columbian blend. The biggest problem I see is I don't sleep at night. I can go 24 hours easily before sleeping for 4-5 hours and I'm good to go again.

To make things worse I am addicted to a high caffeine soft drink. Down here in NE TN we have a local bottling company that makes a drink called Dr.Enuf. I drink the diet one, I don't drink anything but diet drinks when I drink them so there's no fat, calories or carbs, but they are loaded with vitamins & caffeine. But they are so damn good!

Now Stevik, a mtn dew addiction, that's 50 times worse because I'm sure he's not drinking the diet. There are so many calories in a Mtn Dew that for someone who drinks 2 a day that's 25 pounds you could drop fast from cutting them out. I used to think *hit like that didn't matter when I was in my twenties, but I'm getting ready to turn 34 and the metabolism has slowed WAY down!

I think coffee/caffiene has a lot to do with the individual person........as THE GENERAL has mentioned.

I know that I'm better off without it........or consuming very, very little.

I have read clinical studies & done my own research on addictive drugs and people that are prone to be more addicted to certain type drugs. My studies have been taken from a HUGE sample & there's only 1 common denominator in it all & it's something we should be concerned about. The 1 common denominator that everyone who has ever tried drugs, been addicted to drugs, used non addictive drugs like marijuana, have become full out crackheads, all have one thing & one thing only in common.

They drank milk first! Milk is the #1 gateway drug. Even if you don't get addicted to milk which 99.9999% of the population doesn't, it exponentially opens you up for addiction to crack, smack, the lady, maryjane, uppers, downers, blow, china white, alcohol, after shave strained through white bread, peruvian flake, the list goes on.

100% of drug addicts all drank milk before trying their first drug. Something to think about. Now the very profitable coalition for a drug free america would like for you to think that Marijuana is the leading gateway drug, but only 48% of drug addicts have tried marijuana.

firstly, theres nothing wrong with being a drug addict

secondly, you should try some other kinda non-caffienated hot beverage for times when you would normally drink coffee. gl ive kicked a few habits in my day and the old switcheroo is pretty clutch.

probably the study showing the coffee is good for your health was financed by Starbucks.

Good for you Fishhead for this decision. I don't know how you served the coffee but if you put sugar there is a chance your body might crave the sugar...so when you feel like wanting coffee eat some honey or a bit of chocolate...and drink water during the day.
