NFL field goal rule i dont get

When kicking a field goal on 4th down when you miss the opposing team gets the ball at the spot of the kick, not the line of scrimmage.

Why?

When you go for it on 4th down and dont get it the opposing team gets it at line of scrimmage not where the qb threw it. I know thats a bad example but why does team get it at spot of kick?

thats the penalty for going for a FG and missing it, thats why teams should punt it away, its known ahead of time where the other team will get that ball on the miss, unless its missed inside the 20, then the ball goes to the 20 yard line.
