I’ve heard of Wilbur on Mr Ed but not this person. I’m not your age.

Pitched both ends of a double header...and the thing about him, like other guys in his era, they pitched on 3 days rest

In 1972, Wood started 49 games, completed 20, eight of them were nine-inning shutouts, across an ungodly 377 innings.
          Who starts 49 games anymore?

While it's true that there's virtually no stress on the elbow when throwing a knuckleball, 49 starts, 20 completed, is quite an accomplishment.

Check out these five years from 1971 to 1975.
Take it from a math geek, these numbers are insane.

Putting that in perspective, the requirement for year-end pitching awards is 162 IP. He doubled that.
I did a deep dive because that's the kind of nerd I am.

In 2025, Logan Webb led the majors with 34 starts and 207 IP.
53 starters met the 162 IP requirements.

In 1972, Wilbur Wood led the majors with 49 starts and 377 IP
80 starters met the 162 IP requirements.
Six different pitchers made 40 or more starts.

Pop quiz: Who was the last pitcher to make 40 starts?

I was a catcher for 12 years. I only caught a knuckleball once.
As hard as it is to hit, the knuckball is impossible to catch.
Left-handed pitchers are wicked enough; an LHP that throws a knuckleball is downright evil.

Bob Eucker, one of my favorite baseball characters of all time on how to catch a knuckleball.

I think you may be confusing Wood with one of the Niekro brothers.

              Wood had no stick whatsoever.
These numbers are brutal, even by pitchers' standards.

Two extra basehits in thirteen years.
              Yikes.
