Terry Rozier arrested as part of gambling inquiry
Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was arrested early Thursday morning as part of an FBI sports betting investigation, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.

The Eastern District of New York and FBI director Kash Patel will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. ET to announce arrests from the investigation.

Rozier was arrested Thursday morning at a hotel in Orlando, Florida. The Heat lost Wednesday to the Orlando Magic; Rozier did not play due to a coach's decision.

Sportsbooks in multiple states flagged suspicious betting interest on Rozier's statistics ahead of a Charlotte Hornets-New Orleans Pelicans game on March 23, 2023. An unexpected surge of bets -- including 30 wagers in 46 minutes from a professional bettor totaling $13,759 -- came in on the under on Rozier's points, rebounds and assists, causing sportsbooks to halt betting on the veteran guard. Rozier, then with the Hornets, played just 10 minutes before leaving the game, citing a foot injury.

Rozier's attorney, Jim Trusty, previously told ESPN that his client met with NBA and FBI officials multiple times in 2023 and that the initial league investigation determined that he had done nothing wrong. The NBA also said it looked into the matter at the time and did not find that any league rules were broken.

Rozier, 31, is in the final season of a four-year, $96.3 million contract he reached with the Hornets in August 2021. The March 23, 2023, game was Rozier's last of the 2022-23 season with the Hornets, who traded him to the Heat in January 2024.

The case stems from the betting scandal involving former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter, who was banned from the NBA in the spring of 2024 for his role in a gambling scheme around player prop bets. Porter pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges and admitted in court to manipulating his performance in two games during the 2023-24 season. He is awaiting sentencing in December.

Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Heat guard Terry Rozier have been arrested as part of a pair of investigations related to illegal sports betting and rigged poker games backed by the Mafia, authorities announced.

And now....."Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups has been arrested by the FBI for alleged illegal gambling, sources tell ESPN."

    This is getting big.

I'm more interested in hearing the details of these rigged poker home games....

Just the past week or 2, I read that a certain type of automatic card shuffler can be rigged so that one can know the order of the cards and what card will be coming on flop, turn, river etc...I wonder if this is what was going on?

Word to the wise, fellas...Do not play in any home games where there is an automatic shuffler....I am even hesitant to play in casinos that use them now but not a big deal as I rarely play live poker anymore.

I get that it is human nature to be greedy but to risk your life dealing with the mafia and cheating people out of money is beyond stupid for someone that has made and is worth millions. I can see it if you are broke and desperate but personally like peace of mind and not looking over my shoulder 24/7. Maybe they will get a slap on the wrist but it seems like these guys are in deep trouble.

I just got home from running some errands and had VSIN on and Gill Alexander and Bill Krackenburger were talking about this. They actually played a clip from pro poker player Matt Berkey's podcast from 2-3 years ago and he and some others in the poker community were invited to play in these games with Chauncey Billups in both LA and Vegas. He said that he had heard that the games were 100% rigged and didn't play any of them but some of his friends/people he knows did and they all got crushed by people that didn't know how to play poker. This can obviously happen in a small sample size but Berkey called this out years ago. He said some were allin 100+ big blinds with gutshots and hitting them as an example.

Billups is likely getting fired from being the Blazers head coach and ruined his name and reputation just for a few extra bucks that likely did not change his lifestyle whatsoever. Doubtful he will ever work for any team again after all this shakes out but who knows. What an idiot...greed is a MFer....

That’s true man, I’ve heard a few stories like that too. Some of those home games get shady fast. Once someone controls the shuffle, the whole thing’s cooked. Gotta really know who you’re playing with these days.

Yeah, I saw that too. Wild that Berkey warned people years ago and they still showed up. If those games were rigged, that’s just crazy. Hard to believe someone like Billups would throw his whole reputation away for that. Greed really does ruin people.

Here is a recent article on a hacker that figured out that this specific card shuffler can be hacked with a USB:

Billups lawyer is saying he would never tarnish his HOF reputation by doing something like this...I have always liked Billups as a player but let's see what further evidence comes to the forefront here although it does not sound promising for him.

My guess is the players showed up because they usually do when rich non poker pros show up...usually that is a good scenario for the poker pros assuming the game is fair.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. The lawyer’s gonna say what he has to, but the whole thing sounds bad for Billups. Pros usually jump at those kinds of games hoping for easy money, but if it was rigged, they never stood a chance. Wouldn’t be surprised if that shuffler hack was involved—it lines up with how these setups usually go down.
