Valdez has a reputation for being a hot-head. I wouldn't put it past him.

As a former catcher, the way I would have handled a situation like that is off-camera, in the dugout, man-to-man.
The catcher controls the game, not the pitcher. Valdez needs to be reminded of that.

Certain pitchers (Hall of Famer Bob Gibson comes to mind) would insist that Tim McCarver catch Bob Gibson.
(One of my favorite quotes comes from Bob Gibson)

Tim McCarver once came out from home plate to have a 'chat' with Gibson.
Gibson said to McCarver, "Get the f**K behind the plate, what can you tell me about pitching except that you can't hit it!"

      *related, but off topic*
There are several documented cases of a pitcher and catcher conspiring to hit an umpire on purpose.
Not for nothing, the catcher (McCann) here is one of my favorites.
