Your view is a bit different as an international traveler compared to us in the US that grew up with Vegas as a "value" destination. I still have the image of traveling there on the cheap for decades and getting pretty good deals all around. Fast forward to today and they nickel and dime you for everything including $10-20 coffees/drinks and upcharge for damn near everything. I don't mind paying for certain things but they went way off the deep end to the point of completely turning off many that used to visit frequently.

Another thing that turned me off(although it is an epidemic and not only in Vegas) is most of the workers EXPECT tips for doing nothing and giving a bad attitude. I do not mind and actually enjoy tipping for those that deliver great service, not for some punk with a bad attitude behind a counter handing me something and expecting a big tip.

Completely understand that. And I imagine Vegas was really awesome value in those days. One of those good things that couldn't last once they lost the semi monopoly on legal gambling.

Compared to other cities with a boatload of 5 star hotels I do think it is still cheaper than most. But agree they try to trick/nickel-n-dime us like we are stupid though.

I still want to be there during WSOP though!

100% agree with the poster that stated Vegas was far better when the mob owned everything. I actually say the same thing all the time in conversation about Vegas. I guess I have turned into an old man officially as most things seemed better when I was growing up to what they are nowadays haha.

Do it next summer, I am.
(But I'm going to stay off the strip)

Playing in a WSOP event is on my bucket list.
I'm most likely going to play in a deep stack event.
I'd love to play in the Main Event, but my game is not as good as the big boys.

Age is just a number, my friend.
My hip feels like it's 120 years old, but I'm still a kid at heart.

But yeah, I started going out to Vegas in the Rio infancy, that to me is when the corporate takeover, so to speak, was hitting full gear.
            You could feel it.

There has to be enough pushback from gamblers like us to make a difference.
I read all about Negreanu being the watchdog for poker and all, but he doesn't speak up about the 'theft' that goes on with the resorts.
The resorts are going to keep on bleeding us if there's not enough pushback.

I very much hope it pans out to be there next year. During the week Seniors event is on probably.

I mostly like that there are so many amateurs like myself in town and can find good games going 24 hours a day all over town.

I like Downtown more than the strip anyway. Enjoy moving from casino to casino easily plus the people are more relaxed and friendlier down there as a lone traveler.

Negreanu probably does not speak about that because it does not impact him much, if at all.

We are in a recession, so there is that. When you watch some YouTube videos, it looks like the Vegas Strips is almost empty damn.

I came to Vegas the first time in September 2001… and the entire weekend at MGM grand with buddies cost me about $2000. That included dinners, food, drinks, gambling, room, a night out and even a strip club. That wouldn’t last 1 day now. People aren’t looking to spend $10k, might as well stay home for that.

I don’t totally agree with Jeff Renee, the podcast posted that big cities are dying. Texas cities are booming. People continue to move here for jobs and opportunities.. Florida, North Carolina cities are growing. But I agree Las Vegas is in bad shape.

Start with the GOV is now the mob. Used to be able to go to the local coffee shop and play simple numbers game for a 90% payback. Enter lottery/gov and now the payoff is 30-50C on the dollar.

Big lottery was circa 600-700K last week. Article said how great it was to take a circa 350K one time payoff. AND by the way you still have to pay tax (30-40%) income tax on that. OOPS forgot to mention that original odds were 1 in 300 MILLION. WTF!!!!!!

Bump. Goal is to get to Vegas for last ten days of 2025:
                                            1) That's not a big tourism time. So, sometimes find good deals.
                                            2) Would like to get good room rates for Red Rock.
                                            3) Please post any good Vegas room rates.
Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?

He only mentions food prices in this video. He says part of the increase is the new labor contract causing prices to go up. Great. Now you have servers expecting $20/hr just for bringing food out. What happened to high school kids doing this after school?

Lots of established restaurants in the LA area are going under for this same reason. People want $20/hr to pull plates off a table and put up a new set.

No more, I haven't flown out just to gamble anymore, I can get a blackjack game here in Connecticut that pays me 3:2 on 21, not 6:5
Vegas in the 90s was like nowhere else on the planet. Everything was expanding like gangbusters - even though it wasn't about LV, the movie Swingers with Vince Vaughn caught the vibe pretty well. Was not as menacing and the formula for the big boys (MGM, Caesars, etc) were not only profitable for them, but a great time for casual customers like us.

Those companies are upside down today. Overleveraged themselves to acquire as much properties as possible - so when the game changed (casinos coast-to-coast and, maybe worse for the Vegas experience, on our phones) they are completely hamstrung to pivot. These stories you guys are sharing are insane to me bc the Vegas I remember was letting all hang out in my 20s (90s ... I was up to absolutely no good + a disaster = great times) and then again about 10-15 years ago going there for business for trade shows a bunch of times, from a completely G-rated perspective I found it a great experience too.

But paying 6:5 on blackjack? UGH ... that is awful on so many levels.
