Take a few minutes and research what happens when a country becomes heavily in debt. Its the rich that are abused when currency is devalued to devalue the debt. Mexico devalued the peso by 90%. If you had a $100k in the bank you woke up one day and it was only worth $10k. Anyone with some money should have some investments in other currencies. These investments would go up in value when the dollar declines.

Never really understood the 'investing in currencies' bit, always seemed like a weird little game on paper. Can see how it could be profitable, but putting your money into other money (or anything on paper) never sounded like much fun to me.

Have always gone the 'hard product' route with the exception of money in different funds. Figure land and minerals are much safer. If you owned 100 acres in Mexico when they devalued the currency like that, you still had 100 acres that next morning. If you were invested in a producing well or mine, or the products from the well and mine, you still had them the next morning.

Were it not for the fact that there is no serious alternative (both the Eurozone and Japanese economies are in equally bad shape), this level of debt would, a) reduce demand (increase the yield) for your government´s bonds, b) have the dollar under serious pressure.

Your government is in debt to the tune of USD 35,000 for every US citizen and by every measure it is getting worse. Continually printing money that you don´t have is a tactic, in the past, that only tinpot dictatorships used. Now it is de rigeur for all of the major economies. What a fukking mess.
