    Should I be depressed?
Just found out an old friend who is going on 33 years old bought a $750K home with his wife two years ago. The taxes on this thing are $11,000 a year.

I own a home and do not have a mortgage, have little debt and have a white collar career but I feel like such an underachieving loser.

His parents did not have money and I am not sure if her parents do.

That is still a lot of money for a place; in Hoboken, NJ no less which is expensive.

No, why would you? He's in debt and you aren't.

I think investment banking but I am not sure. He did not go to an ivy league college but went to a top 25 school.

If he put down 20% that is still a huge mortgage payment.

Yes you should, but only because you're comparing some banker's life to your awesome degenerate adventure.

I'm in same boat, I was a straight A student through college and got a Bachelors degree in Business. Decided to be a pharmacist and made straight A's, got accepted to every pharmacy school I applied to, and had 1 more easy class left to take before going.

Got addicted to crack. Game over, quit the class midway through with an A in pocket. Never went back to school for that. Tried going back for something else but was still on crack. 100k+ per year career gone.

Sorry to hear about that Wileout; I don't have a dream job but still make enough to do what I want.

It's a townhome and anyone who is 32 and owns a $750K home is doing okay in my book.

That does seem a lot for a town home.

At any rate, didn't you say he was in investment banking or something? I'm sure you have read the papers and seen what kind of compensation they pull down.

If you are about the same age (32) as this other guy, own a home without a mortgage (impressive) and still have your white collar career in this recession --you are doing pretty well in my book.

That's what I think; he left a big firm last year and now works for a small hedge fund but what is so special about him? I knew the kid and he was running around doing the same stupid crap I was when we were young.

We got into a fist fight once and I hit him in the head with a metal garbage can lid; the kid hid out for 4 hours before coming back.

SO ****ING WHAT?! come on man, so you were born to a supportive, well-made family. As long as you do:

                                                        A. Your utmost to make sure that you can also hold onto the stuff they've given you and make a living independently.
                                                        B. Pay them back when they're old (and wacky God forbid) and not throw them in some institution.

Then it's all good. Life was never meant to be fair.

                                                            is this true??
Yes its true. Well let me revise. I was straight A student until 8th grade when I quit trying and started making bad grades, which lasted through high school. Then when I hit college I failed the first semester, then started trying and it was easy for me after that. I do great in school when I study. I just didn't try in high school, got in trouble, skipped school, got expelled twice (from 2 different high schools, within a month of each other). I was on drugs and drunk every day starting at 15 years old. I continued drinking and drugs through college but I was a functioning drug addict. Until I tried crack. The jump from cocaine to crack was a very big jump and it was enough to turn me from functional to non functional.

Every thing that is wrong in my life is caused by alcohol and drugs. If I had never taken a drink or drug I would have a very nice life. Don't get me wrong I have a nice life still but I am middle class when I could be upper class.

But I am very thankful for my family, that I am still alive, and that I have my health. I do count my blessings most days and thank God for them.

Bateman, try to think about those who don't have a thing to eat and live in Haiti. You will cheer up fast.

I just think that you should never compare yourself to other fish, there's always gonna be a bigger one. I think you one should strive to beat himself, his urges and negative sides - and worry about colleague/friend/someone elses' competition later.
