Assuming I get paid $1700 a month in Canada before taxes what can I look for in terms of apartment size, car, etc...

Living at mommy's basement and not paying anything doesn't qualify as an answer.

i grew up just across the border, but had some friends who lived in Windsor and they had one bedroom apartments that were around $450 a month, they were pretty nice.

Thanks. Apparently masu485 thinks is too much money for Canadians. I knew Canada was not expensive but I didn't expect everything to be free.

Some gravy fries, a Tim Horton's coffee, and a cold Labaats beer.

I went groceries the other day with my wife for the first time in 6 months and we spent 250 and came home and after putting everything away we wondered what we got. life isnt easy these days. 1700 is nothing.

here, to simply survive $900-1000/mth. $1500/mth CAD and you can live reasonably w/o extravagances. you can live and be happy at this cost, obviously if you are now living paying $3k and 4k per month you'll think it's not possible to live at $1500/mth. it's all relative in that regard. it's $400/mth here for a 1 bedroom apartment, high speed internet is $30 (and i just came off free dialup a few months ago so you can get internet for free if you want), food, i ingest around 4000 cals per day and don't need to spend $500 on food. again like i said before, if you were spending $500 on food, you'll think it's ludacrous to spend one or two hundred on food per month. granted i eat cheap like oats and pasta etc , but your 1700 is enough.

$500 a month for food is only $16 a day. I mean what do you eat with $16 a day? You buy a 2 liter of coke, a loaf of bread, peanut butter and jelly and you eat that 3 times a day? I'm not following you how you can live with less than $16 a day whether you eat home or out.

What city you looking at Pavy? Like the one poster says, you may be able to do it in Winsor (depressed like Detroit).

Be lucky to last a week on $1700 in Vancouver or Toronto lol.

$16 a day for food is plenty for a single person.

you have to buy food smart, that's all. a bag of oats is 2$ and serves me two meals each day for a whole week, those are your carbs. 4 scoops of peanut butter per day plus a swig of olive oil will last for a month and 3 months respectively giving you a bit of protein and good fats. a bag of pasta is 89 cent and gives you 500 cals of carbs each day for one week. it's very easy to save on food but no one wants to change their lifestyle.

Where do you want to live? In toronto you get very little in newfoundland you get a lot. In trail BC you will become mayor....

                              It's all relative.

more than enough. the problem is no one wants to believe they can live on less than what they are living on now. psychologically i'd have to agree, but to tell others it's impossible to live at 15k or 30k when you've been living like that all ur life is very frustrating.

Well if you can live the rest of your life eating oats and peanut butter then good for you. I eat lots of vegetables and fresh fruit. I spend a lot on tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, eggplants, squash and watermelon, cantaloupe, apples, bananas, oranges, strawberries. I eat a lot of fresh and raw foods like salmon, red snapper, halibut, ribeye and t-bone stakes.
