<damn i wish there was a way to edit titles lol, sorry guys>
In our everlong search for value we got hammered Sunday as we put 20 of our eggs in one New York Jets basket and got hammered. That's OK though, the value was there as we took the league's top defense. This is a marathon, not a race.
Tonight's value is in college basketball.
Every once in awhile, particularly in college basketball, you will have teams that are "one year wonders". The NBA's recent switch of the requirements affords these opportunities; you get a number of players whom in the past would have gone pro straight from high school that now have to put a year of NCAA Hoops in 1st to get their opportunity.
Kentucky is the perfect example of this anomoly. We all know of John Callipari's questionable tactics, but the results he gets from them are just flat out unquestionable. Check out the stats of this year's team. 19-0. 82.3 ppg. 65.6 Pag. That is a 16.7 differential per game, just flat out disgusting. On offense they shoot 49.8%. They hold their opponents to a putrid 38%.
South Carolina is only 11-8 overall. In the tough SEC they are only 2-3 against opponents where as Kentucky is having no problem coasting through them at 4-0.
Bet this one as early as possible as I'm sure others will be getting on the NCAA's #1 team. Normally I hate to bet a team recently made #1, especially during the week (it seems to me the #1 team so often falls in weekday games, just something I feel). It's at -6.5 now, I'd predict it finishes at about -8.
Sure, Carolina's home record, 8-2 might scare you a little bit. Don't sweat it. Look who they have beaten there - Furmon. Richmond. Jacksonville. They dropped games on their home floor to Vanderbilt and a tough Baylor team. This clearly is a team not ready to defeat the nation's #1 team, or even come close to it.
Kentucky is one of those teams that in my opinion should be bet the rest of the way. It is rare that you see a team this stacked, and it seems like the spreads are still adjusting to it. Eventually they will, best to get it in in the meantime. When I see a team that seems to be just flat out overwhelming, 1st I go with the eye test. They definitely pass that. Then I ask myself if they have a player who can just take over a game. I don't think anyone would argue that John Wall is that type of player. Finally, I ask if they have balance. Has anyone else noticed that Patrick Patterson fills it up with 15.9 points a night and DeMarcus Cousins puts in 15.4?
Sure Callipari's Memphis teams have beaten up the weak Conference USA in years past. But this is SEC and this is no joke. Kentucky is just that good and look for this team, if they can hit their free throws (sound familiar, John?), to be cutting down the nets in March. Until then, bet them, especially with spreads as friendly as tonight's.
10 units on Memphis -7 (-110) (yeah, it slipped while I was writing this) to cover.
