Chemist claims Bonds, Sheffield took steroids

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Former BALCO chemist Patrick Arnold has accused Barry Bonds and Gary Sheffield of knowingly taking steroids.

In an interview with HBO's Bob Costas that aired on Tuesday, Arnold said he believers both baseball players took steroids provided by Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative founder Victor Conte.

San Francisco Giants outfielder Bonds and Sheffield, now with the Detroit Tigers, both have denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs provided by the laboratory.

Bonds has 753 career homers, three shy of passing Hall of Famer Hank Aaron's all-time mark. Arnold told Costas he had not met Bonds personally but often heard Conte boast about Bonds' success while on "the program".

Arnold added that "the program" included 'the clear' a previously undetectable steroid which Arnold is credited with creating.

"I have a very strong feeling about it since he was on the program," Arnold said of Bonds. "And like everyone else, the program consisted of the clear.

In 2006, Arnold pleaded guilty to distributing steroids and was sentenced to three months in prison and three months of home confinement.

Wednesday's New York Times carried a statement from Conte, denying that he told Arnold he gave Bonds steroids.

"The program I created for Barry was a comprehensive nutritional supplementation regimen and had nothing to do with the clear or any other anabolic steroids," Conte said.

According to leaked grand jury testimony, Bonds denied that he took 'the clear' but was instead using flaxseed oil.

"I guess it's possible that Barry had never tasted flaxseed oil and said, 'Well, I guess this is flaxseed oil.' But it's pretty hard to believe," Arnold said.

Arnold also was adamant that Sheffield took steroids, despite the veteran outfielders recent claim that he never did because they are something you shoot in your butt.

"That's an ignorant statement," Arnold said. "That's some sort of weird rationalization. No, he took steroids. This is a bona fide anabolic steroid."

Arnold added that he was following Bonds' pursuit of Aaron's record with a close interest.

"I feel like in a, in a crazy way, obviously, I'm a part of it," Arnold said. "How can I want to miss, how would I miss that?
