Hey, it got you out of the woodworks. I agree that probably nothing more will happen. Doesn't mean there aren't any other corrupt refs. I just don't think the NBA is interested in undermining its credibility further. Most people will forgive them once, but not twice.

I bet other refs are a bit nervous tonight.

Donaghy to share info about other refs with feds

08/17/2007 15:43 PM - Former NBA official Tim Donaghy will reportedly give federal prosecutors information that will implicate other referees as part of his cooperation with government officials.

Former NBA official Tim Donaghy will reportedly give federal prosecutors information that will implicate other referees in some forms of gambling activity as part of his cooperation with government officials.

The offenses might not include any criminal activity, but could draw the ire of NBA commissioner David Stern, who has insisted the Donaghy situation was that of a "rogue, isolated criminal."

A report on 1050 ESPN Radio in New York said Donaghy will give prosecutors as many as 20 names of other NBA officials and will detail their involvement in some form of gambling activity. The specifics of the gambling allegations are reportedly believed to include betting in casinos.

Donaghy, who pleaded guilty on Thursday and was released on $250,000 bond, faces a maximum of 25 years in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 9 for conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commerce. He also must pay a $500,000 fine and at least $30,000 in restitution to the government.

I guess we will have to see what he says, but if 20 refs were actually involved in betting games, that could kill the NBA.

Betting in casinos may be against the rules for refs, but It's not really relevant here.

Well, they will need to clean house and bring in a all new crew of refs. Think that would help?

I don't think that will hope over the long term looker. Even if the NBA gets a new batch of refs, the element will still exist, although it might take a couple of years most likely.

No matter what Dan, it will take years for the NBA to get past this.

Anyway, lie detector tests for refs could solve most of the problem. Just as drug tests for athletes.

He's either fixing results or he's the worst ref in the history of sports.

That piece of sh*t stole money straight out of my pocket. Apparently for just 5K a game, paid to him by a bookie.

The State of Arizona may file separate charges against Donaghy.

Although that's not cool, the worst thing is that the sport as a whole has been spoilt by the antics of one (or possibly more) crooked referee.

Tabloid: Feds probe includes Phoenix friend of gambling ref

                                    The Arizona Republic
                                    Aug. 27, 2007 05:31 PM
A Glendale woman was identified in a tabloid newspaper account Monday as an investigative lead in the federal inquiry into disgraced NBA referee Tim Donaghy.

But her attorney said that the feds seem to have lost interest in the wake of Donaghy's pleading guilty to federal charges related to gambling earlier this month.

The article in the New York Post quoted anonymous sources in referring to Cheryl Wolfe-Ruiz as Donaghy's “girlfriend.” It suggested that Wolfe-Ruiz stayed at a Phoenix hotel with Donaghy and a man named Thomas Martino, whom the FBI believes traveled to Phoenix in January to pay Donaghy for information about games that was used for gambling purposes, according to court documents.

With irony and annoyance dripping from her voice, Wolfe-Ruiz said the story was “entertaining in the least,” and referred all further comment to her attorney, Robert Robinson.

Robinson described Wolfe-Ruiz and Donaghy as “friends.”

He told the Post that the two did not have a sexual relationship. Wolfe-Ruiz pulled out of an interview with that paper when she saw a list of questions that was clearly slanted, Robinson said. As for the information that federal investigators were planning to talk to Wolfe-Ruiz, Robinson said the FBI has not spoken to his client.

“After (Donaghy's) plea of guilty, to the best of my knowledge, they've made no attempt to contact her at all,” he said.

Robinson could not say whether Wolfe-Ruiz knew Martino.

Wolfe-Ruiz, 41, is a physician's assistant who owns a sports bar in northwest Phoenix.

She has not been charged with any crimes in the Donaghy matter, and her records as a bar owner and as a medical professional are spotless.

But the Post story reiterated federal allegations that at least one pay-off to Donaghy took place in Phoenix. And an FBI affidavit claims that Martino traveled to Phoenix in January to make cash payments to Donaghy.

On Aug. 15, Donaghy pleaded guilty to felony counts of conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting wagering information through interstate commerce. He was released on $250,000 bond. He faces up to 25 years in prison.

That same day, Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced that he had asked both the U.S. Attorney in New York and the National Basketball Association to turn over investigative records to determine if Donaghy had committed any crimes that could be charged under Arizona statutes.

Special Assistant County Attorney Barnett Lotstein4said on Monday that Thomas was contacted by federal prosecutors, although they had not yet turned over any records. Lotstein also said that the NBA has not yet responded to the request.
