Dad Accused Of Leaving Kids In Car To Play Poker

    36-Year-Old Accused Of Child Neglect

    POSTED: 9:39 pm EDT July 19, 2007

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A 36-year-old Jacksonville man accused of leaving two children alone in his vehicle while he was playing poker was arrested and booked into the St. Johns County Jail on a charge of child neglect, according to WJXT-TV.

A witness called the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office at 3 p.m. Wednesday after seeing two boys, ages 3 and 7, in a running vehicle in the parking of St. Johns Greyhound Park on Racetrack Road.

According to authorities, the older boy told the deputy that his father, Terrence Davis, was inside the Poker Room. The deputy went inside and had security page Davis, who said he had been gambling for about 15 minutes and had only played four or five hands while the children were alone in the vehicle outside.

Deputies said the boys' mother responded and took custody of them.

Davis was charged with child neglect and being held on $2,000 bond.

While the car was running and the air conditioning on, officials told WJXT-TV Jim Piggott that Davis could also face traffic charges for allegedly leaving the car running unattended.

"In today's society, you just never know," St. Johns County Sheriff's Office spokesman Chuck Mulligan said. "Someone could have gone and busted a window out and taken a child or taken them in a carjacking."

A company spokesman said that Davis will be banned from the three Northeast Florida and greyhound tracks and associated Poker Rooms and they will make security changes as result of this incident.

"We have outside security. We're going to make sure they monitor the parking lot, and if anything like this comes to their attention, we would do exactly the same thing -- we'd notify St. Johns County and they would respond," Poker Room security director Asa Higgs said.

Wow, you can't even leave your own kids in the safety of your car anymore? Is this law specific to just the state of Florida.

If they had just looked into this guy's eyes a couple hours before, they would have been able to determine he was a piece of trash and would have been justified in killing him.

something like this happened in Minnesota last winter. But I think the dad went in to play blackjack. He claimed he just planned on winning gas money real quick and then would come back out. His 2 year old child was found crawling around the parking lot in -20 degree weather.

What a total as*hole! letting children play poker (unsupervised) in a car!

A responsible parent would have set up an area somewhere in the house where the kids could be watched, leaving them unattended in the car playing poker could lead to poor play or cheating, you never know what those sneaky kid poker players will do.

What was the father doing while his children played poker? Shopping?

This is clear evidence of how gambling is destroying America's families. I hope our government intervenes and regulates the industry for the rest of the world. They should start by banning all children from riding in cars. They can follow up by denying driving privileges to any man who is brazen enough to produce multiple children. With that kind of regulation this situation would never have taken place.

betplom: Hysterical! Glad you noticed that. It's amazing that a journalist (someone who is paid to write) would actually construct a headline like that, and even more so that an editor (someone who is paid to review writing) would let it go to print. When I say it's amazing, I also mean it's pathetic.

JJ, ask your doctor for that pill I was talking about. After you take care of your addictions, maybe you can get back to school and become a brain surgeon or something. You can save the world JJ!!!!!!

My dad thought the same thing, what's wrong with leaving the kids in the car while I run inside to grab a pack of smokes? What was wrong with it in that case was a little sister reaching over and slipping the car into reverse. Fortunately, the light pole kept the car from drifting out into traffic.

Sorry, but I hope this guy gets the book thrown at him. There's simply no excuse for leaving kids in a car these days while you run into do anything, play poker amongst the anything.

When I was like 8, and my step sister was maybe 5, we were left in my Dads Corvair in the drive way for maybe 30 seconds. In that half minute my sister pulls on the floor shift and some how finds neutral and we roll down the driveway right through a 20,000 gallon above ground pool, we both almost fing drown trying to get out of that car. I still have the yellowed pics of that Corvair sitting in the pool, damn Dad was pissed. Lesson learned never leave kids unattended in a car, running or not.

sheesh ... I popped the parking brake on my dad's Corvair and rolled with it down the driveway, across the street (small subdivision thankfully) and up onto the opposite neighbor's lawn

                                            I hear ya.

I remember one time when I was walking into a sportsbook a guy was telling his kid (looked about 4ish), or grandkid, to stay in a certain spot outside the sportsbook. The kid looked scared and really didn't want to. The guy went into the book and was in there for quite sometime.

I got a hold of security and let them know. I'm not sure what happen, but I hope he got 86'ed or worse. Also, I hope he ended up losing his bet he had to make so badly.
