Everyone get on this play tomorrow. Yes, everyone, even you Sammy. My YTD record in hoops is 64% over 45 plays for +19.00 Units of profit. Not trying to sound like a tout just had a feeling this would come up. The play is Kansas -5.5 @ Tennessee and here is why:
I had this game circled about a week ago when the news broke about the Tennessee players getting into trouble with drugs and armed robbery. I knew I would have been taking Tennessee plus the points until this story broke. This turns the #15 team in the country into a pedestrain Atlantic 10 team skill wise. We all know how good Kansas is so I won't bore you with that but lets focus on what Tennessee has lost. The three players who have been indefinitley suspended are Cameron Tatum, Brian Williams, and Melvin Goins. The one player who was asked to leave was Tyler Smith. So who are those guys?
Being familiar with the Tennessee program I can tell yout that these are crucial losses. Tyler Smith is there best player hands down. The guy can do it all. True he isn't the leading scorer but he is public enemy #1 when other teams are gameplanning to stop the Vols. Cameron Tatum is a another quality piece. He has a great stroke and gets into a rhythm sometimes where he doesn't miss. Brian Williams in my opinion is the most crucial loss in this game. Kansas is one of the few college teams with a true center on the roster, Cole Aldrich. Brian Williams was the only true center on the Vols and after that it is pretty much all undersized power forwards. A majority of the time Aldrich will be guarded by Wayne Chism. Williams 6'11 278 lb frame is going to be missed. Chism is undersized and with Williams gone he is the tallest player on the roster. Behind him you have two players (Woolridge and Hall) who are both 6'8 and weigh just 200 and 220 respectivley. Aldrich will have his way tomorrow and if Chism is guarding him, beleive me I have seen it many times, Wayne will take himself right out of the game by commiting bad fouls. Chism is a key part of this offense and they can't afford to have him off the court for extended time.
Altogether, with these suspensions Tennessee is losing 4 rotation players, 12 years of experience, 80 minutes per game, 32.4 ppg, 14.7 rpg, and 8 apg. So what did they do against Charlotte in their first game without them? Well they are down to essentially an 8 man rotation and the bench is miserable. Renaldo Woolridge was forced into the starting line up and Skylar McBee, Kenny Hall, and Josh Bone are the "studs" coming off the bench. McBee, Bone, Hall, and Woolridge played 77 minutes in the game combined. Before that game they were averaging a combined 36 minutes per game. These guys worked against Charlotte but against the #1 team in the country? No dice. This should be Kansas -11.5.
