Who's the marketing genius on that one? In their newest commercial, a woman says "Dominos crust tastes like cardboard." and someone from the company says "Yeah, we've heard the criticism."

    Are they kidding???

I agree. Plenty of local pizza joints to choose from. You go to the fast food cause they are open late, will delivery further away, and are cheaper.

Dominos does suck. We got coupons in the mail a couple of months ago for large 1 topping for $3.99 carryout and could order up to 10 pizzas and I still didn't buy it.

Dominoes tastes fine to me. Maybe the particular preparers have something to do with it? Not my favorite, but the ones we order occasionally from nearby are fine, except they put scant toppings on. Also, maybe you guys complaining eat/order out a lot?

                                  They've improved...

My recent pies have been pretty damn good.

They just need to make the crust more doughy...

And keep their restaurants clean! Come on guys. I've worked pizza hut and papa johns. We kept it pretty good.

Pizza hut is pretty tasty. I'm starting to like dominoes more than papa johns.

                                  $3.99 is a good deal.

i thought the commercials were wierd and not the best marketing. However, on the pizza chain vs local talk; I dont see the difference between chain and other places. Maybe they are different, but i dont feel i have every had an AMAZING pizza. And they all seem to be at the same par as every other one i have had.

Domino's Launches Massive $75 Million Ad Blitz

Laurie Burkitt, 12.22.09, 11:00 AM EST Will a six-week ad campaign give the chain a boost?

In a new TV commercial from Domino's Pizza company executives huddle in a board room, some with hands clapped over their mouths in horror, as they listen to a consumer say, "Domino's pizza crust, to me, tastes like cardboard."
The ad is part of a $75 million campaign from the Ann Arbor, Mich., pizza company that is supposed to tout a new recipe by the world’s largest pizza delivery chain. TV commercials, including 30-second and 15-second spots created by ad shop Crispin Porter + Bogusky, will break across prime-time networks ABC, CBS ( CBS - news - people ), and NBC on Monday, giving consumers a snapshot of the new ingredients, including garlic-butter crust, shredded mozzarella (instead of diced), and red-pepper pizza sauce.

The six-week ad blitz also features 60-second radio spots and a Web video entailing consumer criticism and company feedback. "Most companies hide criticism, but we faced it head on," says an employee in the video.
Domino's has had its share of criticism this year. The ad effort is the largest from the company since two then-employees in Conover, N.C., filmed themselves preparing sandwiches for delivery. One employee put ingredients up his nose and nasal mucus on the sandwiches. It turned into a digital disaster for Domino's. The video, which has since been removed from YouTube, attracted more than 1 million views and disgusted many consumers.
Weiner says the company has moved beyond the incident, though his emphasis on transparency and consumer involvement highlights that winning trust is still a major focus. "A lot of people love us, but some people think we can get better," says Domino's Chief Marketing Officer Russell Weiner. We listened to them, and we changed our pizza."

A money-back guarantee is being offered to consumers who don't like the new recipe, though there's no option to go back to the old one.

Is this year the right time for a company to tout new ingredients, given the unfortunate video earlier this year? "The good thing about these viral videos is that they come fast and they go fast," says crisis marketing consultant and author Eric Dezenhall, who heads Dezenhall Resources in Washington, D.C. "Enough time has passed for Domino's," he says.
The ad campaign is the company's first major effort since Weiner came on board in September 2008. It is timed to coincide with Domino's 50th anniversary. It also comes at a time when U.S. pizza deliveries, a $33.5 billion business, have been flattened by the weak economy. Domino's third-quarter revenue increased to $302.7 million, up 6.5% from the same period in 2008.

not a bad idea though, them kind of saying people don't like the new recipe will at least get people to try it

Man, if you guys are forced to live in a part of the country where these are your best options I feel really, really sorry for you. One benefit of living near Chicago is we have the best pizza joints in the world. Not that Gino's East crap either. I mean, the mom and pop spots. The little places where the sauce is made with wine and you can see the kitchen from the cash register...watch the cook make your pizza through the glass...you guys are missing out if you have to settle for this garbage.
