Louisiana to Ban Cockfighting in 2008
I don't know how many of you guys have actually been to one of these events before, but I must say they are fun to bet on though. I'll say this much though... You really see some strange people at these things

Louisiana to Ban Cockfighting in 2008

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana will ban cockfighting next year, becoming the last state to outlaw the blood sport, under a bill approved Wednesday by the Legislature.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco's office said she would sign the measure, which bans the rural tradition in which specially bred roosters fight to the death while spectators place wagers on the outcome.

For years, state lawmakers resisted animal rights activists' efforts to outlaw it, but they relented this year on the condition that the prohibition be delayed. It will take effect in August 2008.

New Mexico, the only other state where cockfighting was legal, outlawed the fights this month, increasing pressure on Louisiana lawmakers.

People in the cockfighting industry argued that an immediate ban would leave some of them with hundreds of chickens that are useless if the fights are illegal, because the animals are bred to fight. House members agreed that the cockfighters should have until next August to sell the birds or kill them off in fights.

State Sen. Art Lentini, the Legislature's chief opponent of cockfighting, said he believed the sport's popularity in Louisiana will actually end this summer, because lawmakers also approved an immediate ban on gambling at the rooster fights. Wagering is a major draw for crowds, which attend the fights at arenas throughout the state.

``The gambling ban really puts an end to cockfighting. Betting is the real reason people go to those fights,'' said Lentini, a Republican from a suburb of New Orleans.

The Senate voted unanimously for the bill with the 2008 effective date. Two senators, both of whom represent areas where cockfighting is widespread, skipped the vote.

Wayne Pacelle, head of the Humane Society of the United States, released a statement praising the vote. Congress has also toughened federal penalties for people caught transporting fighting roosters across state lines, he said.

``With a strengthened federal law against cockfighting in effect and the new statewide ban on gambling, there is very little room for cockfighters to maneuver and they should just pack it in,'' Pacelle said in the statement.

More of our civil liberties just fading away. Now the government has decided that we can't even see a cockfight when we visit Louisiana.

I have been to more than a few. The fights are more rigged than the WWE.

The fights with roosters using knives are by far the best though.

Plenty of people I know will not like this outcome.

Last U.S. state officially bans cockfighting

I attended one of these events way back in the 80's when I was a teen ager, and you really see some strange people at this type of event. Back then there were no offshore books or land based casinos like there were nowadays. Not to mention the under age factor.

Anyone else besides me ever attend one of these events before?

Last U.S. state officially bans cockfighting

Louisiana, the last US state to allow cockfighting, has enacted a law to ban the practice.

The state governor, Kathleen Blanco, signed the ban but it will not come into effect until next year.

Gambling on the outcome of fights between the specially-bred roosters will be illegal from next month.

The timing is a compromise between abolitionists who wanted an immediate ban and advocates who said it was an old rural tradition in Louisiana.

Cockfighting involves setting specially-bred roosters against each other in an arena, often leaving them to fight to the death, while spectators place bets on the outcome.

                            Federal controls

Even the first US president, George Washington, and the main author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, enjoyed the spectacle.

Since the time of the Founding Fathers, however, American states have one-by-one banned cockfighting, seeing it less as a sport and increasingly as animal cruelty.

But Louisiana - once a French colony - has always prided itself on being different.

The state is a rich blend of cultures from Cajun French to Creole, and some traditionalists had argued that cockfighting was part of its unique heritage.

But Louisiana's lawmakers have been under pressure to go against these traditionalists for some time.

In May this year US President George W Bush signed toughened federal controls on animal fighting.

Then last month New Mexico's ban on cockfighting came into effect, leaving Louisiana as the only state where it was still legal.

Sensing its isolation, Louisiana's lawmakers have consigned cockfighting in the US to history.

I'm sure Peter Dicks (pardon the pun in the cockfighting thread) is glad to hear that if Sportingbet had been a cockfighting site (instead of an evil online gaming site) that he never would have been detained.

Remember when dwarf tossing was outlawed?

Remember a few years back when nightclubs on slow nights had to find a gimick to bring in a crowd and started having dwarf tossing contests? They were raging successes and the dwarfs were happy making $$$$$$$.Then along comes the political correct Hillary crowd and they decided they knew what was best for the dwarfs so they banned the dwarf tossing promotions.

I would just love to go up to a person like Hillary and tell her that I know what's best for her and that her 1973 pastel powder pantsuits are offensive to others and I think it would be best she wear something more suitable that hides her pregnant papa seamonkey-Dr Seuse Whoville who's shape.

Back to famous dwarfs.Doesn't Hank the angry drunken dwarf on Howard Stern's show look like Chester Marcol the famous ex packer angry drunken kicker?

Doesn't the dwarf on Seinfeld that's in Burger King and many, many other t.v.commercials look like quarterback Curt Warner?
