The dreaded ring of death. How long have you had your xbox? I got one replaced for free from MS. It's a well known problem.

Actually I have had this box for a week. My last one flamed out, this one was bought for me as a gift used by a pal of mine and was said to have fixed the issue and guaranteed to work. I will be getting in contact with the seller asap.

That is garbage. You should be able to get your 360 fixed though. The Ring of death has a 3 year warranty extension.

You can fix it yourself if yout the electronic type. You need to put thermal grease on the CPU. The CPU doesn't have effective heatsink. That's what causes the ROG. You might be able to find someone local to fix it as well.

Just go on xbox.com and fill out the form. They will email you a shipping label to print out, put the sumbich in a box and take to UPS. Then they will send you a refurbished one. I've had 3 xboxes sent back.

Q: How much does it cost for an out of warranty repair?

A: If you submit your out-of-warranty console for repair through the Xbox Support Web site, you will benefit from a discounted flat charge of US$99.99. However, if you choose to contact a Support Agent to create a repair on your behalf, an out-of-warranty repair for an Xbox 360 console will cost US$119.99 (plus tax). If your Xbox 360 console is out of warranty and it has been less than three years from the date that you purchased the console, your repair will be free of charge if there are three flashing red lights on the front of the console, or if an E74 error message is displayed on the screen. Microsoft may test your console for 3 Flashing Red Lights or E74 errors upon receipt at our service center. If your console has not logged a 3 Flashing Red Lights or E74 error, and you are out of the standard manufacturer’s warranty, you will be offered a standard repair at our normal out of warranty fee. If your console is out of warranty and you do not want to pay for it to be repaired, we will return your console to you unrepaired.

Q: My console shows three flashing red lights on the Ring of Light, or an E74 error message is displayed on the screen. Am I covered for warranty service?

A: Microsoft covers repairs for the three lights flashing red on the Ring of Light or the E74 error condition for a period of three (3) years from the original purchase date of the console. If you are out of the initial three year warranty period, you can still receive console repair service from Microsoft for three flashing red lights or E74 for a fee.

No shit. Pisses me off these consoles nowadays. You spend 300 bucks + for a machine you would expect it to last for longer than 3 years. A fail rate this high is not good business. I had my super nintendo for 7 years without any break down. Even PS1 never broke down.

A fail rate this high is not good business. I had my super nintendo for 7 years without any break down. Even PS1 never broke down.
NES here, still working perfectly 25 years later.

After my 360 shat the bed just after the 12 month warranty at the start of the year, it was consigned to it's place in the cupboard. After growing tired of the DSi, I bought a PS3 last month.

Saw this thread earlier, made me go to wikipedia to check on the fault and I found that the fault was an E74 which, since April, came under the 3 year warranty. Back to Microsoft it goes for a free repair. Cheers, Deuce.
